In December, 2023 the New England Scenic Trail officially became one of our country’s newest national parks, and it runs right through West Suffield!

The Peak & West Suffield Trail is part of the Metacomet Trail, a blue-blazed trail long maintained by the Connecticut Forest & Park Association and volunteers from Suffield. Start your hike in the middle of the trail at the Suffield Land Conservancy’s (SLC) Hugh M. and Howard W. Alcorn Wildlife Preserve. Roadside parking is on Mountain Road opposite Phelps Road.

You can head north on the 2.5-mile trail which goes to Rising Corner Road in Agawam where there is also parking. Another option is to cross Mountain Road and enter the trail at the SLC’s Spencer Woods Wildlife Preserve. Head south on the 4.9 mile stretch which takes you through Sunrise Park and comes out in East Granby at the junction of Newgate Road and Turkey Hill Road. In either direction, you don’t have to travel the full distance to enjoy the spectacular views from West Suffield Mountain.

What better way to celebrate Connecticut Trails Weekend on June 1 than by joining the SLC for a hike starting at 10am. Gather the Alcorn Preserve.
