The Polish Heritage Society (PHS) discontinued its monthly meetings during the COVID-19 epidemic and has been unable to resume them regularly. While our monthly meetings have been disrupted, the PHS has not disbanded; it just doesn’t meet as often as it did in the past. In fact, it is pleased to announce several upcoming events. Please mark your calendars and join us whenever you are able. The first opportunity to share your Polish Pride is at the annual Suffield on the Green on September 7 and 8. Please stop by and say, “Dzie’ Dobry!”
The PHS will meet on Wednesday, October 2, at 10 a.m. in the Suffield Ambulance Center. We will show and discuss the PBS documentary “The Polish Americans.” In summary, the film depicts “. . . the gloriously diverse rainbow of cultures that make up western New England, the Polish-American community stands strong and proud. This fascinating exploration of the history of Polish immigrants in the Connecticut River Valley is replete with vibrant images of this still thriving community, from its distinctive music and art to its strong faith and traditions.”
As a reminder, the Suffield Historical Society is a vital supporter of the PHS as a subcommittee. Our partnership ensures that one program each year pertains to Polish culture in general or the history of Poles in this area. On October 9, at 7:30 p.m., I will speak about “Early Polish Leaders in Suffield.” The presentation will be at the Suffield Ambulance Center. It is free of charge and open to the public.
Also, please save the date for the annual Kolędy concert. This event, which closely coincides with St. Nicholas Day (celebrated in Poland) will be held at Sacred Heart Church. This popular performance is arranged each year by Jim Turek, who is joined by other professional musicians. Attendees delight in singing along with traditional Polish Christmas carols. We hope you will join us on Wednesday, December 4 at 10:15 a.m.
Finally, the annual Suffield Historical Society HolidayFest will have a Polish theme this Dec. 14 and 15. The King House will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The house’s first floor will be decorated with examples of Polish culture. Refreshments will include some traditional Polish holiday goodies. We would like to borrow items to include in the displays. If you have any art, costumes, ornaments, or pottery that you would like to lend, please contact Sara Zak at any of the above events or call 860-668-7194.
