Jocelyn Smith and Joseph, Isabelle and Sarah Zaffetti enjoy the Friends of KML book sale.

This was the ninth year that the Friends’ book sale has been held at Sacred Heart Church and once again Father Ted Hall proved to be an ideal space. The church allows us to use this wonderful location free of charge, and its staff and parishioners have been most welcoming – we are so grateful!

Because important renovations were being done in the classrooms this year, our book sale needed to stay within the confines of the big room at Father Ted Hall. This required making space for our more valuable books, and relocating the six categories normally displayed in that area. It worked better than we could have imagined. The new rare book area was more visible and accessible, drawing more customers and increasing our sales.

We had an unusually large number of shoppers at the Friday night preview, but when I checked out “Betsy” on Saturday morning, she commented that although she is usually part of the Friday night crowd, she had found so many good books to buy on Saturday that she plans to remain a Saturday shopper in the future. We also had good attendance on Sunday, when many customers showed up for the half-price bargains. In short, the sale made a generous sum of money that will enable the Friends of KML to continue to enrich the library by funding programs, museum passes, and much more. This sale could not have happened without our year-round sorting crew and the many volunteers who carried over 1,000 boxes of books into the church on moving day, cashiered, and helped clean up afterwards. Thanks, too, to the Town for help on moving day. Thank you!!!

Monthly book collections will resume on October 5 from 10 – noon in the lower (east) lobby at Kent Memorial Library.
