Spencer Oak – Largest Chestnut Oak in New England.
“The largest chestnut oak tree in New England, with a spread of 95 feet and a circumference of 16 feet about six feet from the ground, was discovered on the Eagan farm on North Stone Street in West Suffield.” (from an article from the Hartford Daily News around the 1930s).
It stood west of North Stone Street on land owned by the Beresfords family after being purchased from Hon. Samuel R. Spencer. The land around the tree out to 200 feet belonging to the Town of Suffield “so long as the said tree shall live or remain standing.”
