Did you know that food waste is responsible for 8-10% of annual global greenhouse gas emissions? If food waste were a country, it would be the world’s third largest emitter! The good news is composting is a natural way to recycle food scraps and yard waste into nutrient-rich soil that can be used in gardens and farms, keeping carbon in the soil rather than emitted into the air. More good news: In December alone, Suffield recycled 9,373 lbs. of food scraps, the equivalent of carbon sequestered by 38 trees over 10 years!
Want to learn more? On February 3, members from Sustainable Suffield, our town’s Environmental and Sustainability Task Force, will share interesting and practical information about past, current and future initiatives, including recycling, food waste, energy and education/outreach. The goal is to hold open conversations to encourage collaboration. All are welcome, and the program is free.
The Suffield Garden Club is actively engaged in civic beautification, as many in town know, but is also dedicated to respect for the environment and the protection of trees, plants and birds.
Program information: Monday, February 3, 11 a.m.
Second Baptist Church, Fellowship Hall, 100 North Main St., Suffield.
New members are welcome. Visit suffieldgardenclub.org for more detailed information.
