This month, I write as interim President of the Suffield Historical Society, rather than as Chair of the Property Committee. In this role, I extend the sincere appreciation of the Society to all those who support us in our mission to collect, preserve and stimulate interest in the history of Suffield. This past year approximately 40 volunteers contributed over 2,300 hours of time and energy. Special thanks are due: to the officers and members of the Board of Trustees for their work (often behind the scenes); to the ten docents who collectively volunteered nearly 500 hours to showcase the King House Museum & Barn to almost as many visitors (including 173 fourth graders and their teachers); to the remaining 20 volunteers who help maintain the King House, barn and property; to our researchers and genealogists who help families connect to their Suffield ancestors; and to those who attend our programs. The Society also appreciates the financial support we receive throughout the year. We are especially grateful to those who have generously donated $11,000 toward our goal of repairing and painting the north wall of the King House. The Society would not exist without your time, energy, and dollars. Thank you!
I have taken on the responsibility of President at an exciting time. As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the Society is starting the year with several opportunities to further our mission, including improving our relationship with the public schools and bringing our collection of artifacts out to the community. We are also ever mindful that we have a 260-year-old house to tend to. So, as grateful as I am for your support to date, I humbly ask for more. The Society welcomes ideas to improve our website, programs, and newsletter. There is always a need for volunteers (especially younger, more energetic ones) to attend to small chores, graphic design, public relations, yard work, data entry, etc. Though our Annual Appeal is mailed primarily to members, everyone is welcome to donate to this critical project to repair the house’s north wall. We still need $4,000 to reach our goal. Every donation counts!
