As we begin the 2026–2027 school year, I am excited about the year ahead and grateful for the energy and enthusiasm our students and staff have brought back to our schools. The first days of school are always special as students reconnect with friends and teachers and everyone settles into the routines of a new year.
We have much to feel good about in Suffield Public Schools. Last year brought many accomplishments across our district, from strong student achievement and state and national recognition to new learning opportunities for students. Those successes are a credit to our students, staff, families and the support of the Suffield community.
At the same time, strong schools never stop working to get better. As we begin this year, I want to share a few areas that will receive particular attention.
Teaching and Learning
Our most important work continues to happen every day in our classrooms. This year, we will continue strengthening instruction across all four schools, with a focus on providing students with the right balance of strong teacher instruction, opportunities to think critically and solve problems and support based on their individual needs.
At the elementary level, we will continue building on the progress we have seen through our reading and mathematics programs. Across the district, our teachers will continue working collaboratively to strengthen curriculum and instruction and provide engaging learning experiences for all students.
Preparing Students for a Changing World
Artificial intelligence and other technologies are changing how we live and work. Our responsibility is not simply to introduce students to new technology, but to help them learn to use it thoughtfully, ethically and productively. Our district AI Committee, which includes teachers, students and administrators, will continue to help guide this work. At the same time, we remain committed to ensuring that technology supports, but does not replace critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and relationships that are essential to learning.
Finding the right balance between technology and non-screen experiences is more important than ever and presents a challenge for families and schools alike. One way we are working toward that balance is by continuing to expand place-based learning throughout our curriculum. By using Suffield’s rich historical, environmental, and community resources as an extension of the classroom, we can connect academic learning to authentic, real-world experiences and help students develop a deeper connection to the community around them.
Supporting Every Student
Academic success is closely linked to students feeling safe, supported and connected to their school. We will continue our focus on positive school climates, student well-being and our simple but important message that Kindness Matters.
We will also continue strengthening the supports available to students who need additional academic, behavioral, or social-emotional assistance. Our goal is to meet students where they are while maintaining high expectations for where they can go.
Middle School Project
This will also be an important year for the future of Suffield Middle School. Our community will continue considering options to address the significant needs of the current building and determine the best long-term solution for Suffield. We recognize the magnitude of this decision and are committed to providing residents with clear information and opportunities to participate throughout the process.
I am very confident in the direction of our schools and incredibly appreciative of the teachers, staff, families, Board of Education, town leaders and community members who make this work possible.
Most of all, I am excited to see what our students accomplish this year. I hope everyone has a wonderful 2026–2027 school year!
