Second Baptist Church News

Second Baptist Church is hosting many events that we invite the Community to attend during the month of October.

Join Second Baptist for a free Community Shred and E-Recycling Day at on Saturday October 10 from 9 a.m. to noon (or until truck is full). There will be a two-box limit of shredding per vehicle. The items that are brought to be shredded will be placed in the back of the truck from Infoshred and brought to their facility to be destroyed along with the e-recycling items. This is a free event, but we would appreciate a freewill offering of either nonperishable food items (which will go to Suffield Community Aid) or gently used clothing (which will be given to “It Takes a Village”).

At our Fall Kids Party on Friday, October 9 at 12:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall, we will be learning about Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), a Mexican tradition usually celebrated Nov 1-2. This is a joyful cultural celebration rooted in All Saints and All Souls Day, when families remember loved ones with photos, stories, favorite foods, marigold flowers, and thank God for their lives. We will talk about how Christians remember with gratitude, celebrate life and find hope in heaven. We will make a “Memory Table” to thank God for special people and pets. Our crafts (paper flowers, colorful banners, decorated sugar skulls) are happy and kid friendly. Lunch will be provided. We are excited to learn about another culture with respect and joy!

On Saturday, October 10 at 5 p.m. we will host a Community Open Mic Night – A Celebration of Local Talent and Creativity. All styles of expression are welcome including singing, music, poetry, comedy, etc. Come share your talents and support others as they share their talents!

On Tuesday, October 13 we will host an American Red Cross Blood Drive – Noon-5 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. For an appointment, please visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Finally, on the evening of Saturday, October 31 (Halloween), don’t forget to stop by the Common Room. Congregants will participate in trick-or-treating with children and families strolling Main Street.

During the month we have several on-going ministries where we would like to invite you to join:

Prayer Shawl Ministry – Friday, October 9 and 23 – 10 a.m. This recently revived ministry gives individuals the opportunity to come together for a time of prayer and fellowship while creating shawls that are intended to provide love and comfort to their recipients.

Soup Kitchen Ministry – Saturday, October 10. Serving a meal for anyone in need at the Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen at South Congregational Church in Springfield, M has been a ministry at Second Baptist for at around 35 years! If you would like to participate, please call the church office at 860-668-1661.

Special Needs Fellowship – Monday, October 12, 6:30 p.m. This is another long-standing monthly outreach program for our friends in the Suffield community with cognitive limitations to give them a safe environment for crafts, singing, and fellowship. “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did it to me.” Matthew 25:40.

Contact the church office (office@secondbaptistsuffield.org or 860-668-1661) if you are interested in participating in any of the above opportunities. Additional information for these and other activities/opportunities at the church is available on secondbaptistsuffield.org, along with our NEW Facebook and Instagram sites. On the website, there are links for the Sunday morning bulletin and “Weekly Wednesday Write-Ups” with upcoming events and updates on the various ministries in the congregation.
