Christmas Tea and
Queen Victoria
Saturday, December 1 at
3 p.m. at the Senior Center.
Some Christmas Tea and Then The Queen, Victoria, of course. Queen Victoria and her Royal Guard will pay an unofficial visit with commoners following a spot of Christmas tea with a twist. Bring your own teacup, saucer and dessert plate. We’ll supply the tea and goodies. The Queen will allow questions following her presentation. For more than 20 years, Sally Mummey has brought historical figures to life to audiences throughout the New England region. For years, Mummey has portrayed Mary Todd Lincoln but became interested in Queen Victoria when she read letters that the Queen wrote to Mary Lincoln following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Mummey has appeared on PBS’s American Experience and in a Civil War documentary for the History Channel.
Mike Shalin
Talks Red Sox
Monday December 10
7 p.m. at the Senior Center.
(Earlier date was postponed because of snow.) Mark the date! Noted sports journalist Mike Shalin has the inside scoop on all things Red Sox (and New York teams.) He has a new book called The Hometown Team: Four Decades Of Boston Red Sox Photography with photos by Steve Babineau. The book also includes interviews. Mr. Shalin briefly wrote for the New York Post on the New York teams and then spent 22 years covering sports at the Boston Herald, covering the Red Sox, of course. Now he is a freelance writer and an official scorekeeper for the Red Sox. Mr. Shalin has written numerous books including a biography of Don Mattingly. Dennis Eckersley, who penned the foreword to The Hometown Team, has known Mr. Shalin since Eckersley’s first stint with the Sox from ’78-‘84. With his journalist credentials, Mr. Shalin has been a Hall-of-Fame voter since 1989. Copies of his book will be available for purchase and signing.
Great Decisions
will start in February.

Great Decisions is America’s largest discussion program on world affairs designed by the American Foreign Policy Association. Individuals who register for the program will receive a briefing book, paid for by The Friends of Kent Memorial Library. Participants will read about the issue in the briefing book before the discussion. Topics which will be discussed this year are:

• The Middle East: Regional Disorder
• Nuclear Negotiations: Back to the Future?
• The Rise of Populism in Europe
• Decoding U.S.-China Trade
• Cyber Conflicts and Geopolitics
• The United States and Mexico: Partnership Tested

Kent Memorial Library’s New Year – YAY!
It looks like the library will be back at our beloved 50 North Main Street soon! Maybe February?
The library staff, Friends of the Library, the Library Commission and the Library Foundation are planning Grand Opening activities, so stayed tuned.
One thing the library staff would like to do is to create a human chain from the temporary library at Ffyler Place to the Big House at 50 North Main Street to move some books. It would only be a symbolic gesture as most of the books will be moved by trucks and not humans, but it would make a great photo shot!
