On September 9, Suffield Country Club, on North Main Street in the Historic District, celebrated its 90th anniversary in a well-planned evening celebration. The weather was perfect for this memorable event, and more than 80 guests gathered on the elevated western lawns of the club to watch a beautiful sunset over the club’s hilly western vistas beyond its green, landscaped fairways. Members spanning three generations of golf, swim, tennis and social memberships at the club enjoyed champagne, appetizers, a three-course dinner and dancing. There were also many conversations, laughs, stories, plaques and memorabilia shared during this wonderful evening as well as a sense of gratitude expressed by those in attendance for everything Suffield Country Club has meant and continues to mean to the Suffield community. The sentiment expressed by many was that the club has always had its own special turn-of-the-century charm and although renovated and upgraded over the years, continues to engender in its members a natural and unspoken tradition of fostering a deep sense of comradery and fellowship among members and the community at large.

The important recreational and social role that Suffield Country Club has enjoyed in the town of Suffield for its members and guests was toasted at its anniversary celebration by First Selectman Melissa Mack, who presented the club with a written proclamation and formal tribute, under the official seal of the Town of Suffield, commemorating the 90-year history of Suffield Country Club in the Historic District of Suffield.

The Master of Ceremonies was Stan McLennan, PGA Golf Professional, who has overseen all golf operations at Suffield Country Club for the past 29 seasons. In his remarks, Stan always does his best to remember and express the many contributions of the past PGA golf professionals at SCC, notably the late Peter Dunn, golf pro from 1951 to 1974, and the late Jack Aldrich, golf pro from 1974 to 1988, and the work of present and past Club presidents, committee members and staff who work together in cooperation to help make Suffield Country Club the special place that it is. On this occasion Stan talked about some of the unique history of the club and its members and the visionary Fuller, Ahrens, and Montgomery families of Suffield who founded Suffield Country Club in 1927 and also remembered Sam Fuller in a special way, who was the only founding member still alive until his passing in November 1916. He specifically mentioned Spencer Montgomery, a member of Suffield Academy class of 1933 and Yale class of 1937, who is still a member of Suffield Country Club and at age 103 is the oldest living member of the club even though he now lives in Florida. Even though Spen couldn’t make the event, he would be there in spirit because it seems that no matter where Mr. Montgomery is, he will always be a member of Suffield Country Club.

The Suffield Country Club, along with its staff and members, extend special appreciation to Amy Egan and Stephanie Dolan who planned and organized the 90th anniversary celebration at Suffield Country Club and whose planning, vision and tireless work made this event what it was, an event to remember. As Stan said, “The event was a grand celebration!”
