A Disappointing Choice

Dear Editor,

During our town’s state of emergency due to the coronavirus pandemic, I was disappointed to see the Suffield Democratic Town Committee (DTC) take the symbolic action of removing our First Selectman Melissa Mack from its membership. While the DTC was holding its meeting on March 25, the town announced that another resident had tested positive for coronavirus.

According to DTC Chairman Tom Frenaye, the First Selectman was removed because some members felt she no longer belonged on the committee after supporting Republican candidates in last year’s election. There is a time and a place to have civil disagreements about local politics, but this is not one of them. This is a time when we should all be uniting together to help our fellow citizens stay healthy and safe.

During emergencies like a pandemic, trust in our elected leaders is more important than ever. Each decision could literally be the difference between life and death. We can get through this emergency if we set aside our differences and work together for the good of our community. A little collaboration can go a long way.

Will Hermann
