You don’t really appreciate what you have until it’s gone.

For 46 years, the Second Chance Shop has been offering high-quality, used women’s, men’s, and children’s clothing; shoes, jewelry, linens, purses, shoes, and collectibles at bargain prices. And each year, the shop donates 100% of its profits to The Village for Families and Children in Hartford whose mission is, “To build a community of strong, healthy families who protect and nurture children.”

In Suffield we have 130 volunteers who are devoted to the work of The Village. The volunteers normally cover two shifts per day, six days a week. We were especially pleased to be able to give an unusually large donation to The Village this year due to brisk sales and two very special events. Barbara Coffin, former volunteer and artist, so generously donated 100 original paintings, and a hugely successful art sale was held in Kent Memorial Library’s gallery last November. The Shop also held a very profitable “Pocketbook Bingo” night last September.

Then the pandemic arrived. On March 16 we suddenly lost our two essential elements: shoppers and donations. Like most other retail enterprises, we were forced to close.

Now, however, our Co-Presidents, in collaboration with guidelines from The Village, approved safe but limited shopping. Our volunteer technical wizard was able to continue providing on-line shopping (secondchanceshopsuffield.square.site) with curbside pickup. This website also gives you access to our private shopping calendar. These efforts were met with much enthusiasm, albeit reduced income due to the limitations of CDC guidelines. Since our hours are changing weekly, please call the shop for more information at 860-668-2841 for events and hours.

Stay tuned for the Second Chance Shop’s ongoing modifications as we volunteers continue to safely offer high-quality merchandise at bargain prices in our charming shop in the plaza across from CVS.

Lastly, please send us your donations. We especially are in need of fall/winter items. See you soon! And thank you so much!
