Pastor Mark Jette of Sacred Heart Church performs his first Blessing of the Bikes on May 22.

For many years, my brother and motorcycle rider Dave Ledoux of Andover, CT, looked forward to a Blessing of the Bikes service offered annually in Hebron, CT. Dave was disappointed to learn that this annual service would not be taking place in Hebron this year, prompting him to search for another. Since his search found none within a reasonable distance, it seemed inevitable he would have to go without an official blessing to kick off this year’s riding season. Sensing his disappointment, I contacted Pastor Mark Jette of Sacred Heart Church here in Suffield, asking if he would be interested in offering a Blessing of the Bikes and without hesitation, Pastor Jette volunteered his services.

Because it was such short notice, just a small group of riders attended. But I’ve got to say, even though this was admittedly Pastor Jette’s first Blessing of the Bikes, it was obvious he did a bit of homework preparation for the event! Pastor Jette offered a general prayer, a prayer from St. Patrick and not one but two bikers’ prayers that got many of us a bit choked up. Quite simply, it was very moving. The small group rode to a nearby restaurant and enjoyed brunch together followed by a short ride out toward Barkhamsted Reservoir.

Pastor Jette, my brother Dave and I hope to make this an annual event every May. Look for notifications next March and April in the local papers, Sacred Heart announcements/website etc. A small donation was suggested for each rider and it was agreed that all proceeds would go to Suffield Community Aid, 450 South St, Suffield, CT. If interested in next year’s Blessing of the Bikes, contact, Dr. Don Ledoux at Turning Point Wellness Center, 860-758-7272.
