Together in Community

After nearly three years on the Board of Directors for the Suffield Observer, I have finally been cajoled into being your Editor of the Month. I say this partially in jest. As often occurs in life, when something new arises a bit of anxiety develops. Avoiding the Editor of the Month role wasn’t necessarily purposeful, but it did mean I could avoid the unknown. Would I know what to do? Would I be competent for the task? Would I have enough time? Well, guess what…as usual, the unknown hasn’t been nearly as difficult or scary as anticipated. I have happily been reading through the articles for accuracy and consistency and most importantly, I have thoroughly enjoyed the camaraderie in the Observer office as volunteers come and go preparing the issue.

I grew up in Suffield and have lived here (minus a few years for college and work) most of my life. I can say with conviction that Suffield is a unique and beautiful place. Even more so if you find a way to become a part of the community. I am not suggesting that it’s necessary to run for office or join a board of our many exemplary organizations. I am suggesting that a sense of belonging and connection is deepened when you give of yourself. It can be as simple as stopping by the library, dining and shopping local, exploring our local parks, donating food, supplies or time to Suffield Community Aid, reaching out to a neighbor in need or supporting some of our events like Suffield on the Green. These simple acts within our community, taken individually or as a whole, have helped to form my sense of belonging here in Suffield.

I have found that volunteering my time and talents to this town over the years has brought me a deep sense of purpose and joy. I encourage you all to find your sense of community. Explore what connects you to Suffield and helps to make this town so special. Share your experiences with others. Invite your neighbors and friends to become more involved with you. Together we become a stronger community. And of course, while you’re at it, don’t forget to spread some kindness as you go.
