The next Historical Society meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 9, at 7:30 p.m. at the Suffield Ambulance Center (205 Bridge Street.). In recognition of Polish American Heritage Month, I will talk about a group of Polish immigrants who played a significant role in our community in the early 1900s. This presentation is free and open to the public in person or by Zoom. For more details and the Zoom link, visit the Events tab at suffieldhistoricalsociety.org.

The open house season at the King House Museum and Barn has concluded, but the spirit of community service is still alive within the Society. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the dedicated volunteers who shared their knowledge about Suffield’s history and its former residents with our visitors. The experienced docents, including Art Sikes, Beverly Sikes, Barry Sisk, Jackie Hemond, Rose MacNeely and Dorian Taylor, have been instrumental in passing on their knowledge about the house and barn to two new docents, Karen Markham and Wendy Taylor. Their contributions are invaluable, and we eagerly look forward to recruiting more docents next spring.

Three youth organizations in town have generously volunteered to help the Society paint the picket fence surrounding the property. The date for our special ‘Tom Sawyer Day,’ a unique event that promotes the spirit of community service, will be announced soon. We welcome any group or family that would like to participate. We will gladly certify the completion of community service hours.

Another opportunity to support the Historical Society will be on Oct. 19, from 9 a.m. to noon, when we hold our biannual Clean Up Day. We welcome community participation when we gather to close the King House and Barn for the winter. Projects for the morning include moving and covering the carriages in the barn and various projects in the house and around the yard.

Volunteers will celebrate Halloween on Oct. 31 by handing out candy from the King House porch from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Please watch the Suffield Historical Society or Suffield Forum Facebook pages for details about these events.
