Dear Editor:
I am writing to draw attention to a situation in town that most residents are unaware of. I have seen no mention of it in the Observer.
St Joseph’s Church on South Main Street has been sold. For well over a year, a developer has been trying to force its conversion into (up to) 16 apartments. Neighbors have fought hard to stop this. Now, in an angry and aggressive move, the developer has cleared the rear land, including wetlands, of all trees. There is talk of apartments, potentially adding dozens of units, residents, and increased traffic to this small space.
Suffield will change and must. But let these decisions be thoughtful and well-considered. Does the town have a vision for the future? Will decisions about development be made by the town’s elected leaders? Or by outsiders abusing the system? This is Our Town, Our Historic Main Street.
If residents care, it’s time to Step Up! to Speak Out!
