The energy level is high with the anticipation of Babb’s Beach and Park opening for the summer season. The past year the Town’s Public Works Department along with other service providers and volunteers have worked diligently to make improvements and prepare the park for residents once again. The beach has had a face lift with yards of new sand raked into it. A new access road has been installed with handicap parking spaces near the beach. An ADA walkway will be rolled out making the beach accessible for everyone. Generous donations by the Friends of Suffield have resulted in several new picnic tables dotting the park. A newly constructed platform has been placed overlooking the lake where the Citizens Restoring Congamond will host a series of Bluegrass concerts this summer on Sunday afternoons beginning in July.
Patrons to the park will be greeted by gate attendants who will welcome you and point you in the right direction to park in the upper lot or to access the lower lot for handicap parking. This year, the beach and park will be open free of charge to residents and their guests. The park is open daily from 8 a.m. to dusk.
The waterfront will have a designated swim area that will be roped off with buoy markers defining the specific area to swim. Boats will not be allowed in this area. The south side of the beach will have a net installed for beach volleyball enthusiasts. For those who prefer a game of horseshoes, the upper park area has horseshoe pits and horseshoes will be on site for patrons to borrow. Also, you can awaken your spirit this summer as we will be offering new Yoga classes on the beach.
A storage rack for kayaks, canoes or stand-up paddle boards will be available this summer on a first-come-first-paid basis. Residents may rent a storage slot for the summer which will allow easy access to the water. Spaces may be purchased online at suffieldrec.com.
