A Lifetime Achievement Award, a painting of the center of town featuring the library (by our own Observer volunteer, Peggy MacKinnon), was presented to Ruth Zimmerman, for the countless hours she spent setting up the office at the Observer. Another Lifetime Achievemnt Award, a 1962 painting of Suffield Center (also by Peggy MacKinnon), was presented to Lester Smith for the sleepless nights he spends working at the paper submitting articles, photos, writing captions, etc. Ann Kannen laughs as Lester points out where he got his hair cut 60 years ago! The Need for Speed

My friends and I went pretty happily through Bridge Street and Spaulding schools where, seated in rows of wooden desks, we learned to read. We started with our letters and moved on to those antiquated Dick and Jane books in reading groups with equally antiquated names such as bluebirds, cardinals and sparrows. Our time spent with books was happy and stress free until we arrived in middle school to be introduced to the wonders of speed- reading.

A Scout Biking Adventure

In October, Suffield Troop 260 and sister Troop 262 went biking through the Blue Hills Reservation, located minutes from the bustle of downtown Boston. The reservation stretches over 7,000 acres from Quincy to Dedham and Milton to Randolph, providing a green oasis in an urban environment. The weekend was beautiful, and the troop took full advantage of it, leaving camp early in the morning to get a jump on the day. The reserve was already bustling with avid hikers, horseback riders and fellow bicyclists, but with 125 miles of trails, it was never crowded. The Blue Hills literally offers something for everyone, regardless of skill level.

Suffield History Tome Paints a Picture of Home

If every town has a story, then it stands to reason it must have a history. It is easy to dismiss the day-to-day happenings of a small town as inconsequential, but string those events together, and a picture develops of a place that people call home. Like all images, literal and figurative, that picture will be used by those in the future to imagine the past. That image of Suffield — a town that despite its quiet personality has a number of interesting, if not quirky, character traits — has been well documented in Suffield Stories from Another Half-Century, 1970-2020. The hardcover book, available for purchase locally, reflects the herculean effort by Suffield’s 350th Anniversary Committee, led by Observer Editor-in-Chief Beth Chafetz, to solicit, collect, edit and publish the Suffield stories from roughly 100 writers.
