SMS Drama Club

Suffield Middle School will be transforming into a “school of hard knocks”, proudly presenting this year’s musical production, Annie, Jr. Based on the book by Thomas Meehan, music by Charles Strouse, and lyrics by Martin Charnin, the classic tale of Annie follows a spirited, redheaded orphan on her action-packed and emotional voyage from the daily doldrums of her hard-knock life, a step away from the dazzling streets of New York, to the fairytale-come-true setting of a billionaire’s art-deco mansion. This household-name musical includes more than 30 colorful characters, many heartwarming and a few, not so much. Our ensemble of scrappy orphans, charming rogues, and bustling servants are sure to keep you laughing and entertained. Annie, played by the shining 8th-grader Brynna Tinnirella, is certain to capture your hearts with her emotion-filled performances of “Maybe” and “Tomorrow.” Meanwhile, Miss Hannigan, the breakout role of eighth-grade superstar Sophie Collins, will have everyone quite thankful that they don’t live under the same roof with this sometimes playful but always underhanded, orphanage director. Be sure to come join our charming cast on a fun-filled winter’s visit to 1930s New York City.

News and Events at Second Baptist Church

On Sunday, February 10, the Second Baptist Church received a “Green House of Worship” award from the Interreligious Eco-Justice Network (IREJN) as a Level Two Green Congregation. Second Baptist has been encouraging its members and others to be more consciously aware of our life choices and the positive and negative effects these have on the human and other-than-human world. The church has been advocating practices and life-style choices that will be mutually enhancing to people and planet, such as, eliminating the use of bottled water, Styrofoam, plastics (in whatever way is possible); eliminating the use of toxic chemicals in our lawn-care; replacing all lighting with LED bulbs; making our building and one’s home more energy efficient while conducting an energy audit on our building; putting in a water bottle re-fill drinking fountain in the church building, and advocating for state and federal policies that put the health of humans and the planet as a top priority. We are always looking for ways to live more consistently with our faith for the health and well-being of all people and all creation. On Sunday, March 3 at 3 p.m., Second Baptist will join with The Friends of the Farm at Hilltop and the Suffield Land Conservancy to host a workshop about the importance of bees.

Calling Colonial Campers

Travel back to 18th-century colonial Suffield for a week of summer fun! Monday, July 29 – Friday, August 2 children ages 8 – 12 can don period costumes (or wear their everyday summer clothes!) and participate in the activities that took place at the Phelps–Hatheway House & Garden each and every day. Campers will learn about creating textiles (dyeing wool and cloth, knitting, sewing, spinning and weaving), westward expansion and trade (exploring maps and uncharted land), and school and home activities (classrooms, gardens and crafts). Best of all is the opportunity to learn about the toys and play games of the past. Meet historic figures and campers will design their own tours of the museum to share with family and friends.
