Women’s History in Suffield

The Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame organization teaches us that “women’s lives have been filled with rich experiences, and their daily contributions are an invaluable part of our history that has too often been overlooked.”

With that insight in mind during the winter term, Suffield Academy’s American Studies class reviewed the history of Suffield with a focus on women’s history and now look forward to making a multimedia presentation during the Suffield Historical Society meeting on April 23 at 7 p.m.

The meeting will be held at the Suffield Senior Center. The meeting is open to the public, and newcomers are most welcome.

We Need Your Help

We will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Suffield Observer in May. We have located over half of the original volunteers and are seeking your help to contact the following volunteers whose names appeared on the masthead of the very first edition so that they can be included in the celebration.

Bald Eagle Golf Outing Benefits Hilltop

Make plans now to join The Friends of the Farm at Hilltop for our fifth annual Bald Eagle Golf Outing on Saturday, June 8. The event, to be held at the Suffield Country Club, is a major fundraiser for FOFAH. Proceeds will be used to pay for structural improvements to make it possible for the historic dairy barn to be open and accessible for public events. Registration and lunch for the 18-hole scramble format golf outing will begin at noon followed by a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Golf will be followed by a reception and dinner at the Country Club’s Sunset Tavern at 6 p.m.

For a $150 donation, each player will receive lunch, golf, reception, and dinner.

Observer Accepting Scholarship Applications

The Suffield Observer Board of Directors will sponsor two scholarships to Suffield residents who will be entering an accredited two or four-year college in September. The two scholarships are in memory of Samuel S. Fuller, the founder of the paper, and Robert O. Y. Warren, a former chairman of the board. Each $1,000 scholarship can be applied for by contacting the guidance department at Suffield High School or Suffield Academy, by requesting a form from the Observer office or online at https://thesuffieldobserver.com/scholarship-information/. The Samuel S. Fuller Scholarship is open to any Suffield resident who plans on studying journalism or communications and has a background of community service. The applicant is required to write a 500-700 word essay or give a five-minute presentation in an electronic medium about something he or she loves to do, bringing to life the applicant’s enthusiasm, emotion and passion for the topic.

Chet’s Place Needs Help

It is cold and snowy as I write this, but thankfully spring is right around the corner. In addition to the warm weather, blossoming flowers, and singing birds, across our country spring brings us the Great American Pastime of softball and baseball. I personally can’t wait…it brings back memories of catch with my dad…teaching my son to throw, catch and hit…memories that will last  forever. In our great town of Suffield, the tradition of softball and baseball remains alive and well; and can be witnessed spring and summer evenings at the Daniel K. Christian Field on Hale Street. Christian Field will soon be bustling with the crack of the ball striking the bat, the smack of the ball pounding the gloves, the kids cheering on their teammates, the umpires yelling strikes and outs, and the fans cheering on their teams. In addition to these sounds of the sport, we look forward to the amazing scent of the food of our pastime; the smell of, among other foods, popcorn and hotdogs.

Dian Friedman Speaks at Suffield Woman’s Club

Dian Friedman’s talked about her trip to Israel and Jordan in October and November 2018. She traveled with a group of 15 people through Overseas Adventure Travel in Boston. She told of her experience swimming in the Dead Sea, boating on the Galilee, and leaving a note in the Western Wall in Old Jerusalem. She stayed at a kibbutz and visited the Golan Heights and visited Tel Aviv and Haifa. Dian said she learned as much about Christian history as she did about Israeli history and felt safe while she was there.

Everyone spoke English, so there was no communication problem.
