The threatened rain postponed itself and the temperature was comfortably cool, so conditions during Suffield’s Memorial Day observance on May 28 were fine for the customary short parade up Mountain Road and traditional ceremony on Veteran’s Park.
Great weather and the tradition of the event brought out an impressive bunch of athletes and exercisers to what is now the Suffield Firemen’s Association Paul Simison Memorial Run, honoring the memorable and admirable man who started this race, now in its twentieth year.
It was a major step forward, and by the time this report is read the big contract for remediating the library’s PCB contamination problem will probably have been signed. Work was to start in mid-August.
Boy Scout Troop 260 awarded the Eagle Scout rank to Michael Kopec in a traditional candle-lighting ceremony at the Second Baptist Church on May 22.
The timing of the event did seem odd, but it makes sense when the whole story is told. On May 30, a few weeks ago, First Selectman Melissa Mack cut a ribbon strung across one aisle of the big array of solar cells erected in Kevin Sullivan’s back field on North Street in late 2016.
There are a lot of folks in town who follow that great commandment, and many of them came to Christian Field on a beautiful Wednesday afternoon near the end of May to help a troubled Suffield family.
The First Annual Dustin L. Doyon Memorial Road Race on Saturday, May 26, attracted even more participants than the popular Firemen’s 5K eight days later.
The Town website had announced that a group of officials would hike the Windsor Locks Canal trail on June 2 in recognition of Trails Day, the spring celebration sponsored by the Connecticut Forest and Parks Association. But things got complicated.
The variable light rain on May 12 drove the post-ride activities of the PMC Kids Ride indoors, but a great batch of Suffield youngsters – 207 in all, ages 3 to 16 – weren’t deterred from their commitment. And the pre-event fundraising to provide the entrance fee and much more had been completed in the preceding months, so this year’s Kids Ride brought in $52,541 for cancer care and research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
The caption of a photo in last month’s Observer reported that completion of the new Broad Brook Brewery (BBB) being constructed on South Street had been delayed. It turns out that the delay was prompted by a stop work order issued on March 28 by Suffield Building Inspector Ted Flanders.
