Planting for the Future

The Suffield Tree Committee has the pleasure and responsibility to follow the directives of two special Funds. The first was left in memory of Helena Bailey Spencer, in care of the Town to be administered by a committee of the First Selectman, Town Treasurer and the President of the Suffield Garden Club. The second was a bequest from Vallyn Gallivan, a forward looking woman, who left her gift in care of the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving to be administered by that same committee. Additional members have joined this committee and many of the past presidents of the Garden Club have stayed on. In the past few years the committee has planted 46 new trees with 39 of them planted within the Main Street Historic area.

SHS Walkout Becomes Vigil

Exactly one month after the Parkland shooting, a majority of the schools in the country walked out of their school at precisely 10 a.m. in the morning. Suffield High School joined along, 135 students signed up to walk out of class at 10 a.m. to walk to the auditorium. After the students piled in, high school senior Madison Kadamus leads the group into seventeen minutes of silence. Every minute, Kadamus would say one name of the seventeen victims of the shooting. The entire auditorium was enveloped in silence, the only noise coming from the occasional squeak of a chair and a cough here and there.

Conservancy Spring Programs

Suffield Land Conservancy’s Annual Spring Programs are a wonderful opportunity to connect with the outdoors, discover wildflowers, explore the forests and uncover different species of birds that are right in your very own backyards. Open to the public, please join us for each of these outdoor adventures with your friends and family members. Annual Wildflower Hike will be held on Sunday, April 29 at 2 p.m., rain or shine. Please meet at Sunrise Park where we will gather at the pavilion. Come discover over 30 beautiful spring wildflowers.

Update on Road Projects for 2018

During 2016 and 2017 most of the $9 million of bond funding appropriated at the end of 2015 was utilized for 39 miles of road improvements as follows: 9.5 miles of pavement overlays; 26.4 miles milled and paved; and 3.1 miles reclaimed and paved with drainage improvements.

Interactive Flight Science Demonstrations

Open Cockpit Experiences in historic aircraft

Computerized Flight Simulators

In addition, the following special events are scheduled:

Monday April 9: Balsa Wood Airplane Workshop 10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Build and fly a balsa wood model airplane. This workshop is for children ages 3 and older, must be accompanied by an adult. There is a $5 cost per model kit. Tuesday, April 10: LEGO Flying Machine Contest 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Children ages 3-13 can construct flying machines using the Museum’s  LEGOs. Winners will be awarded prizes in three age categories.
