$1,000 Scholarships Still Available

The Observer is still looking for worthy high school seniors interested in a $1,000 scholarship for college. Surely, there are parents and high school seniors out there who might find an extra $1,000 helpful toward college expenses. The deadline for applications is May 15. The one-year scholarships are for students residing in Suffield and attending a four–year college in the fall. They should be planning to study history, communications, journalism, creative writing, political science or research and should have participated in community service.

Teens and Vaping

E–cigarettes, or vape pens, have become very popular among high school students in the past five years. E–cigarettes are battery–operated devices that heat a liquid which usually contains nicotine and other flavoring and additives. Vaping is inhaling the aerosol or vapor produced by the heat. E–cigarettes are now the most commonly used form of tobacco and nicotine and are just as addictive as regular cigarettes. In addition, e–cigarettes can contain harmful ingredients such as ultrafine particles that can be inhaled deep into the lungs, chemical flavorings that are linked to lung disease, heavy metals such as nickel, tin and lead, and carcinogens like formaldehyde.

Suffield Community Aid

In memory of our late volunteer and Board Member, James F. Coggins, Jr., SCA offers a $1,000 award to a graduating Suffield high school senior who demonstrates selflessness, generosity and concern for the community through their volunteer activities.

Fun Hops at Friends Spring Event

The Friends of Suffield’s “Welcome Spring” egg hunt and bunny visit on April 6 at Spaulding School brought baskets full of joy to local kids and their families. In addition to visiting the Bunny, little ones searched for treat-filled eggs, got to meet – and pet – a couple of real bunnies, enjoyed spring-themed games and much more. One of the day’s most popular activities was face painting, graciously provided by the artistic pros from The Suffield Players. These masters of drama turned out all sorts of magnificently decorated faces – it was no wonder there was a line the whole time for this activity. One young attendee, Cora Tini (5) of Suffield, ranked the face painting as her favorite activity, along with searching for eggs and getting her “spring nails” done.

Enfield Loaves & Fishes Spring Challenge

The Enfield Loaves & Fishes Soup Kitchen is once again beginning its Springtime Challenge. Our principal fundraising drive helps to keep our doors open. The Soup Kitchen is seeking monetary donations from March through April 30. Letters were recently mailed to past benefactors, and area schools and churches, in an effort to raise money and supply food items to enable Enfield Loaves & Fishes to feed the ever-increasing number of needy people in Enfield and surrounding towns. The Enfield Soup Kitchen served 113,871 meals in 2018, including meals to hungry children and 76,422 snacks served to children participating in after school programs of Educational Resources for Children (ERFC).
