Beluga Suite by Susan Boucher, a Suffield resident who taught science and special education for the past thirty-six years, is the author’s most recent book to date. The book is about a young Inuit girl who befriends a pod of beluga whales as she plays her flute each day at the fjord by her village. Suddenly, the belugas are gone. After school the following day, Anja is summoned by her grandfather over the ham radio to go to the middle of the village; she is to be transported to the trawler out by the ice sheets to help a pod of whales. They are in a desperate situation.

The Suffield Woman’s Club (SWC) held its annual Red Cross Blood Drive recently at the Second Baptist Church. The drive collected 21 productive pints of blood which equals up to 3 lives saved. The SWC would like to thank the American Red Cross for all their work setting up and working the blood drives (especially ours!), our Club volunteers, bakers and sandwich makers and a very special thank you to all the donors who take time out of their busy schedules to come out and donate. You made a difference in someone’s life.
Although it may not be widely recognized, Suffield has a vibrant arts community. This summer, that community will have the opportunity to flourish and come together through the Suffield Arts Festival. On July 14, local artists will convene at Bruce Park for a day full of performances and activities, all while honoring the themes of unity, peace, love, and hope. The Festival will begin at 2 p.m., and will be held outdoors. Songs, dances, plays, comedy and more will keep you entertained all throughout the day!
Join the staff of Connecticut Landmarks’ Phelps-Hatheway House & Garden for a dramatic reading of the Declaration of Independence on Sunday, July 8, at noon, as we continue to celebrate July 4th!

Justin Kaput from Suffield High School has been selected as one of this year’s Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic Grosvenor Teacher Fellows in recognition of his commitment to geographic education. The 2018 Fellows, a group of 40 highly respected educators from the USA and Canada, will embark on global expeditions on board various Lindblad Expedition and National Geographic ships for a hands-on professional development experience. This year marks the 12th year of the Grosvenor Program, established to honor former National Geographic Society (NGS) Chairman Gilbert M. Grosvenor’s lifetime commitment to geographic education. The program began with two Fellows in 2007 and has grown each year. The expeditions were donated in perpetuity by Sven-Olof Lindblad and Lindblad Expeditions to mark Grosvenor’s 75th birthday in 2006 and honor his service to the enhancement of geographic education.
