PMC Kids Hit New Record

The variable light rain on May 12 drove the post-ride activities of the PMC Kids Ride indoors, but a great batch of Suffield youngsters – 207 in all, ages 3 to 16 – weren’t deterred from their commitment. And the pre-event fundraising to provide the entrance fee and much more had been completed in the preceding months, so this year’s Kids Ride brought in $52,541 for cancer care and research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. This was a new record for the Suffield event. As before, the Ride began in the McAlister-Middle School parking lot, under the Suffield Fire Department’s giant American flag. Older kids rode their bikes up Hill Street to Russell Avenue and back, about two and a half miles.

July 4th Concert with the Kevin Prater Band

Make your Fourth of July special this year by attending an outdoor concert with The Kevin Prater Band! The free concert will take place on Wednesday, July 4, in the bandstand on middle green in the center of Suffield. Music will begin around 5 p.m. and will continue into the evening. There will be food and soft drinks available for purchase, or you can bring your own picnic. The Kevin Prater Band (KPB) bases their sound on strong vocal harmonies.

Farmer’s Market Begins

Suffield’s Farmers Market begins its 2018 summer season on Saturday, June 16. We have a number of familiar vendors that return each year to provide a wide assortment of locally grown fresh fruits, produce and hand crafted products. Our returning vendors are Cupola Hollow, Merry Mite Wild Gardens, Easy Pickins, Maplewood Farms and Bielonko Farms. We have some new vendors coming on board, so check our web site for more details. Kent Library will be “popping up” at the Farmer’s Market with kids activities and items to check out on June 30, July 14 and 28 and August 11 and 25. This season we will have visors, bags and farm boxes for the children and materials for them to take a plant home to make them a special part of the Farmer’s Market experience.

Free Cancer Educational Seminar

Survivor Journeys™, a nonprofit organization offering support for cancer patients, survivors, their caregivers and families, is offering a free seminar entitled Cancer Survivorship 101—What Happens Next? at Max’s Tavern’s Julian Appleton Room at the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield on Saturday, June 9 at 8 a.m.

Natasha Verma, an award-winning film director, philanthropist, television reporter/anchor at NBC Boston, and cancer survivor will be the keynote speaker. In addition a taped message from Hoda Kotb of the Today Show will be played at the session. The morning will begin with a continental breakfast followed by presentations by experts in their respective fields. In addition to the introduction and survivorship offerings by Dr. Jay Burton, Founder and President of Survivor Journeys™, topics will include the late effects of cancer treatment, anxiety and fear of recurrence, fatigue and sleep, nutrition issues, exercise and rehabilitation, and disability law as it regards cancer patients.

Stroke of Color at Phelps-Hatheway

Welcome spring and Connecticut Landmarks’ 2018 season! The Phelps-Hatheway House & Garden is delighted to welcome Lynda Montefusco to our gallery with her exhibition, A Stroke of Color. The exhibit includes a selection of Lynda’s favorite paintings which explore various themes and techniques. On Friday, May 4 from 5:30-7:30 p.m., meet Lynda, enjoy her colorful works, and discuss her passion for painting while sampling an elderflower spritzer and spring treats. Admission to the Opening Reception is free.

Attic Tours at Phelps-Hatheway House

At the start of each month from May through September, take the ever-popular 1st Saturday Attic Tour at the Phelps-Hatheway House & Garden! Guests will be permitted to venture beyond the museum stanchions with Connecticut Landmarks’  (CTL) staff for a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the Phelps’ servant and attic spaces. View objects and collections from the 18th to the early 20th centuries and learn about historic Connecticut and the role the Phelps-Hatheway house played in the Suffield community. The series begins on Saturday, May 5th at 1:30 p.m. Take the Phelps-Hatheway House tour as well, and be sure to check out Lynda Montefusco’s art exhibition in the Visitor Center. 1st Saturday Attic Tours occur on May 5, June 2, July 7, August 4 and September 1.

Hang ‘em High

Container plantings are a wonderful way to display flowers and greenery which adds curb appeal and charm to a home. I love to see classic window boxes brimming with vigorous florals. Traditional urns showcasing shrubs/flowers are a huge favorite of mine too. Hanging planters are popular and likable as well; the caveat here is to hang ‘em high to prevent knocks to the noggins. Have fun creating your own floral displays in containers filled with a commercial potting mix.

Calling All Campers!

Travel back to 18th century colonial Suffield for a week of summer fun!  Monday, July 30 through Friday, August 3, children ages 8 to 12 can don period costumes (or wear their everyday summer clothes!) and participate in the activities that took place at the Phelps-Hatheway House & Garden each and every day. Campers will learn about creating textiles (dyeing wool and cloth, knitting, sewing, spinning and weaving), westward expansion and trade (exploring maps and uncharted land), and school and home activities (classrooms, gardens and crafts). Best of all is the opportunity to learn about the toys and play games of the past. Meet historic figures and design your own tour of the museum to share with family and friends. A special surprise will await all on the final day when music and dancing fill the air!

Delayed Delivery

Copies of the The Suf-field Observer destined for West Suffield Post Office box holders are customarily delivered by the printer to the Suffield P. O. and then forwarded to the West Suffield P.O. for the boxes there. That did not happen for the April issue. After receiving a number of complaints, we checked and confirmed the situation. When the West Suffield box problem was discovered, we carried a supply of papers to the West Suffield P. O., but it was more than a week later than the normal schedule. We are very sorry for the inconvenience.
