As I write this, a mourning dove is taking a sip from a puddle in our driveway. His red legs look sharp against the water, and he seems to be really enjoying this impromptu water hole.

For most of the day on a weekend afternoon in late April, folks paused on the South Main Street sidewalk waiting for a mother bear and her cub to come down together from a big tree. Bears are not uncommon in the neighborhood, not far from large, wooded tracts, but they generally just amble through.

As you drive around Suffield, not only will you see the trees budding and flowers blooming but you will see many local farm stands opening their “doors” or setting up their stands at the end of their driveways to sell their local treasures.

Winged Treasures at Windsor Locks Canal

Songbirds abound at the Windsor Locks Canal State Park due to the 16 nest boxes that surround the fields on both sides of Canal Road. The boxes are in areas of scattered trees and short ground cover where the birds can scan the ground for a meal of insects and spiders.

I have always had a soft spot in my heart for meadows. I spent much of my childhood racing through them in my cut off Levis, en route to my uncle’s pond.

New Horse Arena Built

It’s not uncommon for an out-of-town contractor to build something in Suffield, but since late February, a crew from Quarry View Building Group has been commuting weekly all the way from Lancaster, Penn. They specialize in timber frames and event space construction, and many of the builders are Amish.
