Preppers Please!

Preppers take text material submitted to the paper and “prep” it in column format. They also serve as copy editors, adjusting details to the Observer’s standards. Preppers work from the 10th of the month to the 16th. Shifts are usually scheduled in two hour time slots. Contact us at inbox@thesuffieldobserver.com or (860) 668-7442 if you are interested in joining our team of volunteers.

The Beauty of Imperfection

A little while back I was on a ferry off the coast of Cape Cod. The seas were a bit rough and I was glad not to be upchucking when I caught sight of two men making their way on deck. Like bookends, these two guys had bald heads, madras shirts and sneakers. I noticed one of the men was helping the other; hand on the small of his back, arm resting on his friend’s. The friend had some crutches, and a glimpse at his footwear told me that walking was not easy, and had never been.

Save Money with Medicare Choices

Looking back on my journey to enrolling in Medicare I wish I had gotten free assistance from a Medicare CHOICES Counselor. There are two counselors in Suffield that you can meet with at either the Senior Center 860-668-8830 or at Suffield Community Aid 860-668-1986. These trained, unbiased volunteers can help you find the best information for your situation. Call either agency for a free “Medicare CHOICES Counselor” appointment. I didn’t do that until later.

New Sign Installed

Up on his scaffold over the lower roof, Dave Adams, one of Suffield Village’s multi-talented construction and maintenance crew, attaches the V of the new sign on the south-facing gable over Highland Park Market.

Deputy Chief Well Trained

Dan Vindigni was pictured in the Observer last month when he was promoted to his new volunteer position as deputy chief of the Suffield Fire Department. We didn’t appreciate then that he also serves Suffield as a member of the town’s Emergency Management Committee. The Observer received information subsequently about the exceptional training that Dan recently completed for Suffield. The Town had nominated him as a candidate to attend the FEMA National Emergency Management Executive Academy, and he was accepted – one of only 40 in this year’s program from 120 applicants nationwide. The training comprises four separate one-week sessions in February, April, June, and August, using the facilities of the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Md., (near Gettysburg, Pa.).
