The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving has recently established the Greater Together Community Fund designed to benefit 29 Connecticut towns, Suffield among them.
Suffield Academy has opened its 2020/2021 academic year with full enrollment of 410 students. Head of School Charlie Cahn reports that the school has had no attrition due to Covid 19, quite a remarkable feat given the circumstances.
Surely, we all sympathize with the very difficult position in which our schools are finding themselves during the Coronavirus outbreak, as they try to make decisions about the upcoming academic year.
The campus at Suffield Academy is a well-maintained historic site on our Main Street, so it is no surprise to learn that behind the scenes the school has been working steadily for many years to improve its use of natural resources, reduce its carbon footprint, and thus become more environmentally friendly.
People who work in schools often speak of challenges, especially in terms of helping students learn to make the best of them. “Every challenge is an opportunity,” we say to students and to one another.
It is no surprise to anyone in Suffield to read that our library has suffered extraordinary tumult in the last few years, with much repair work and many code requirements needing to be met and less than stellar temporary accommodations during the interim. We all rejoiced when it reopened last summer, its beautiful new Mary Anne Zak entrance offering much-needed handicapped access.
Rituals at holiday times enrich all our lives, and Suffield has lots of them. None are more joyful than the Christmas Concert at the Second Baptist Church, which is scheduled for Saturday, December 14, at 3:00 p.m. (snow date December 15).
On Sunday, September 22, the Kent Memorial Library Foundation honored those who have made the new addition possible – not just those who have given money, but also those who have given generously of their time and energy.
Joe Blake is a winner, in many ways. To begin with, the Suffield resident has recently received the Principal of the Year Award from the Connecticut Association of Schools.
There has been a great deal of interest in recent weeks about the NFL draft and the choice by the Miami Dolphins of Christian Wilkins, a 23-year-old Suffield Academy alumnus (class of ’15); his athletic gifts are well known and appreciated by many.
