In the early years of the Polish Heritage Society (PHS), many members wrote down the stories of their parent’s immigration to the United States. A strong supporter of the PHS, Bernice (Karakla) Sobinski, wrote her parents’ accounts in 2009, and Jim Turek interviewed her at a PHS meeting in September 2018.
For most of her life, Betty Arnold has lived in Suffield. Hers is one of four Black families who live on Kent Avenue. In years past, Kent Avenue and Ellison Street were where many Blacks lived, all within a half mile or so.

On Saturday, May 1, the Friends of Kent Memorial held their first book collection in over a year due to the pandemic. It was obvious that many Suffield residents had been waiting patiently for us to come “on line” and begin collecting again, because many, many people drove to the library and lined up to unload boxes and bags and armfuls of books during our two-hour collection time.
Kent Memorial Library’s “Books & Beyond” series continues on June 10 with New York Times bestselling author Ashley Audrain, who will be discussing her debut novel The Push. Ashley is a native of Canada and will be joining us from Toronto, where she currently resides with her family.
Summer Reading Raffle Baskets are back! This year’s Summer Reading Program returns on June 21.
The Friends’ June 7 meeting will include a discussion regarding the proposed change of the Friends annual meeting from April to October. Because this is a change in by-laws, it must be a vote of the Friends membership.
