It’s been the custom for a number of years for The Suffield Observer to print individual photos of star athletes at Suffield High School with their parents (and sometimes coaches) when the happy winners are signing to accept their scholarships and promising to play in the sports where they have excelled.
A good school is always on the move, always considering ways to improve the program and/or the facilities, always looking to the future. That is certainly true of Suffield Academy, whose most recent plan for improvement is a new dormitory on its main campus.
The Suffield Board of Education has selected Mrs. Jana Volpe to be the new Elementary Special Education Supervisor of the Suffield Public Schools.
Congratulations to Julianna Marie Service who has been named the Class of 2021 Valedictorian and Abby Grace Halasi-Kun who has been named the Class of 2021 Salutatorian.
As we conclude what has been a very uncertain and difficult school year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there are many signs that the Suffield Public Schools, our families, and our students are returning to the normal ways of yesteryear.
Since 1940, the Suffield Garden Club (SGC) has been planting dogwood trees along Main Street; there are currently 109 trees. For years the SGC was fortunate to have the town help spread the mulch, but due to budget cuts the SGC has had to include that in their responsibility of caring for the dogwood trees.
Songbirds abound at the Windsor Locks Canal State Park due to the 16 nest boxes that surround the fields on both sides of Canal Road. The boxes are in areas of scattered trees and short ground cover where the birds can scan the ground for a meal of insects and spiders.
On Saturday, March 20, The Suffield Fire Department hosted a specialized stabilization and extrication drill, instructed by members of Connecticut Custom Fire Training team at the Highway Garage on Fyler Place.
With what looks like some normalcy for the summer, more people will be traveling to places other than the grocery store and the doctor’s office. It’s time to pack your Observer and take a picture highlighting the places you’ve been and share them with our readers.
Over the next few months, a working group established by the Planning & Zoning Commission will be working to create an affordable housing plan for the community.
