I am extremely dismayed at the recent developments regarding the town community center at Bridge Street School.
I cut the tape: the CVS register tape that runs to three feet or more!
I hear that Jackie Hemond is resigning from her position as our Library Director.
Dear Editor,
Is it time to let go of the Bridge Street School? I don’t mean in a cold way like demolish it or knock it down. I mean in a thoughtful and caring way to celebrate its passing. Perhaps, a ceremony to reflect on its meaning to the Town of Suffield. Perhaps creating a suitable commemorative structure or monument to memorialize the School and all that it meant to generations of students.
Dear Editor,
Veteran’s Day in Suffield had many observances: flags on Main Street, flags on homes, flags at the Veteran’s Memorial Park in the center of town. And most moving were flags on resting places for veterans at Woodlawn Cemetery on Bridge Street. For me the most moving event was when the doorbell rang mid-afternoon and three young scouts from Troop 11963 were at the door. The young middle girl handed me a 3×5 card and five American flag wrapped Tootsie Rolls. The handwritten note on the card: “Thank you for your service”.
The Suffield Observer newspaper has always lived up to its mission: “To build a sense of community… and provide a forum where all sides of issues may be addressed.”
The demolition of the old Suffield, Connecticut town center was the biggest mistake the Town ever made. Why wasn’t the town center placed in the Historic District by the Historic District Commission?
We are an elderly couple who recently moved to the beautiful Suffield area. And you know sometimes a bit forgetful. After taking a nice stroll along the canal waterway, we arrived home only to realize we had left our digital camera at the park. Fearing it was lost, I posted on Facebook hoping to get help in finding it. Within a day, I got a reply from a nice man who is involved with the conservancy of the canal who returned the camera to us.
Dear Editors,
The Board of Education has just imposed pay to play and parking fees on high school students in Suffield. To quote the Yankee Institute’s recent review of the State Legislature’s budget diversion of public transportation funds to create a crisis requiring tolls: “Creating a crisis to justify the imposition of unpopular and unnecessary measures is an offensive way to conduct public policy.”
I hope the citizens of Suffield will see through this maneuver of Chairman Davis and the rest of the Board for what it is, offensive to say the least.
An important issue that has troubled and eluded our town for many years is the lack of a connector road from Bradley International Airport to the Enfield-Suffield Bridge to divert traffic from Main Street. It is a proposal that I vigorously advocated as First Selectman, but I could not get traction at the time. I urge the town, its leaders and citizens, and local, state, and congressional representatives, to wage a bipartisan effort to resurrect this project. Area industry is expanding and Bradley is growing, with a current passenger count of over 6.5 million yearly. There are plans this summer to build a new car rental facility, plus a new terminal in the near future, as DOT projects the passenger count to go to 10 million plus.
