Troop 66 Events

Troop 66 from West Suffield has had a great fall and winter. We had a canoe campout where we paddled down the Delaware River, a video game lock-in where we stayed up late and played videogames, and a Thanksgiving campout where we cooked a Thanksgiving feast for our families. Our most recent outing was to a local Boy Scout camp called Camp Mattatuck, where we stayed in a cabin. Some of our upcoming events include: a second video game lock-in, the Klondike Derby (a winter scouting competition), and a camping trip to Washington, D.C. Our troop was featured in the November 2019 Boys’ Life magazine with two pages of pictures and quotes. These pictures were taken during our 2018 Thanksgiving campout.

Suffield’s Affordable Housing

Did you ever wonder about affordable housing in Suffield? Where are these affordable homes? How many choices are there? Where are they located? Here’s everything you ever wanted to know. Well, maybe not everything.

Friends of the Windsor Locks Canal

Volunteer members of the Windsor Locks Canal State Park Trail met monthly with local and state officials throughout the winter months, making plans for moving forward in our quest to preserve and enhance the park and trail for your enjoyment. Our volunteers have been cleaning up the winter debris and servicing and repairing equipment in anticipation of many visitors. At the southern entrance to the trail in Windsor Locks, a new park with tables and ample parking has been completed. Future plans for this area include historical signage and a kiosk to welcome and inform visitors. The park remains open year round with the exception of the gated section along the canal.

Local Staff Member Now New Librarian

It is no surprise to anyone in Suffield to read that our library has suffered extraordinary tumult in the last few years, with much repair work and many code requirements needing to be met and less than stellar temporary accommodations during the interim. We all rejoiced when it reopened last summer, its beautiful new Mary Anne Zak entrance offering much-needed handicapped access. The original building, with the addition, has provided if not exactly a new life–since many of its original challenges still exist–but certainly a renewed energy. Into this milieu has stepped even more energy, this time in the person of Garrett Pinder, our newly appointed Head Librarian. Garrett grew up in the Bahamas; he is a transplanted New Englander, though he attended both secondary school and college in Virginia.

Phyllis Stafford: a Master of Miniatures

I once thought about living in a dollhouse when as a child I curled up in a comfy armchair to read The Borrowers by Mary Norton. The “borrowers” were a tiny family, who would have loved the miniature rugs and tapestries designed by Phyllis Stafford, instead of the paper rugs and postage stamps which adorned their floors and walls.

Town Accepting Private Roads

For a number of years, the Town highway crew has maintained many of the town’s private roads as a matter of public service and safety, particularly those around the Congamond Ponds. The effort has regularly included snow plowing and local patching.

February 25 Vote Results

There were two different ballots distributed to voters on February 25: white ballots for the tiebreaker vote for one seat on the Water Pollution Control Authority, required by State Statute, and yellow ballots for referendums on two questions concerning Town property.
