New Brewery in Home Stretch

In late May the proprietors of the Broad Brook Brewery hung a big banner in front of the long-delayed construction project on South Street, announcing BROAD BROOK BREWERY COMING SOON. The foundation, steel framework, and exterior sheathing had been largely completed by April 2018, when the stop-work order was issued.

Hundreds Stomp for Alex

Alex Scott is gone, a victim of childhood cancer. But her lemonade stands live on, raising funds to fight that vicious adversary, and a group of dedicated local women called Driving for a Cure held an event in Suffield on May 18 to support the cause.

Two New Eagle Scouts Honored

With their traditional candle-lighting ceremony on May 21 at Second Baptist’s Fellowship Hall, Troop 280 awarded the Eagle Scout rank to Jonah Berrien and John Killam, both of whom had crossed over from the Cub Scout program in March 2011. Both had earned various awards along the way, both were members of the Order of the Arrow and both had earned the required 21 Merit Badges and completed their Eagle Scout Public Service Projects.

Volunteers Sought for Old House Photo Index

Delphina Clark’s photo albums are a great resource for studying old homes in Suffield, but they aren’t easy to use.  The Suffield Historical Society is seeking volunteers to help correct that difficulty. Delphina (1892-1984) was a graduate of the Yale School of Architecture and became a long-time resident of Suffield, moving here about 1933.

The second decade of the new millennium was a tough period for the Kent Memorial Library, but the clouds have cleared, and if all went as seemed likely at the Observer’s press time, there would be a grand reopening on June 29.

Ceremony Held at Babb’s Beach

About 30 people gathered by the performance platform at Babb’s Beach on May 31 for the grateful celebration honoring Nelson Babb and his family. They also celebrated the new flagpole installed by Citizens Restoring Congamond (CRC).

Books Moved, Library Opening Scheduled

On April 23, immediately after the Observer’s May issue went to press, First Selectman Melissa Mack announced that the Kent Memorial Library would reopen on Saturday, June 29. There were still a number of tasks to complete, but it looked as if the June 29 date would work, including word from principal donor Michael Zak that he could be present.

New Plans for the Highway Garage

The Suffield Highway Garage on Ffyler Place was built in 1974, but for over a dozen years, the Town has been contemplating ways to move it elsewhere, removing a perceived deterrent to desirable, tax-paying development of the entire Ffyler Place neighborhood: the Town’s two acres and the Laureno family’s 27 acres.
