Books Moved, Library Opening Scheduled

On April 23, immediately after the Observer’s May issue went to press, First Selectman Melissa Mack announced that the Kent Memorial Library would reopen on Saturday, June 29. There were still a number of tasks to complete, but it looked as if the June 29 date would work, including word from principal donor Michael Zak that he could be present. Many library aficionados looked forward to the end of their long wait. At press time for this June issue, nothing has caused a change in that schedule. On Saturday April 27, books that had been stored in big cases in a box trailer at the highway garage and in a storage pod next to the temporary library were brought to Bank Lane and unloaded, in a welcome respite in the spring rains.

KML Teen Programs

Suffield Youth Services and Kent Memorial Library are working together to help SHS students manage the stress of finals. Parents can encourage their students to attend the June 4 Study with A Therapy Dog session at the Youth Center located in the Senior Center on Bridge Street. From 6 to 7:30 p.m. students can study with friends, steady the nerves with therapy dogs and nourish the soul with pizza and treats. Why study alone when you can be with friends? “Healers with Halos” have been very generous with their time, and the students really enjoy petting the dogs while they study.

“A Universe of Stories . . . to Remember.” That’s our theme for the summer program. We will celebrate our return “home” to Main Street with lots of baskets to give away!

Librarian Spies?

I have toted home a few books on spies for my husband which got me thinking. Many writers were spies – but were there librarian spies? I could only find three. Vasili Mitrokhin was a KGB librarian. For 10 years, from 1975 to 1985, he logged the names of KGB officers, their agents and informants.

Looking forward to May, we have another Study With a Puppy session May 7 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Youth Center on Bridge Street. Teens grades 6-12 can come for pizza, study time, a bit of recreation and some pet therapy, thanks to Healers with Halos.

Library To Open in June

First Selectman Melissa Mack announces in her update on Page 3 of this issue that the Kent Memorial Library will open to the public in June.  That is great news, and this reporter’s words may have become superfluous, but some details may be of interest. One day in early April the town’s temporary library on Ffyler Place was shut down for an hour and a half in mid-day, and the library staff all got a chance to examine the interior of the “big house,” in which many of the last tasks of its renovation and remediation  had been completed. The general feeling of the staff was one of enthusiastic optimism, for the light at the end of the tunnel had become quite bright.

At the time of the staff’s tour, the new (black) carpeting had been laid in the upper levels, and almost all of the shelves had been installed, including a reduced amount of free-standing shelves in the non-fiction room (mid–way up the ramp on the south side). The newly renovated restrooms were approaching completion. Fifty-four new seats were ready to be installed in the auditorium (replacing 70), and the new “compact” shelving was already installed in the historical room.

Suffield Yearbooks

Good news for SHS graduates: Kent Memorial Library  has digitized all of the SHS yearbooks from years 1940 to 2014.
