The Suffield Garden Club will hold a meeting on Monday, May 6, at 11:45 a.m. at the Second Baptist Church, Fellowship Hall. Coffee, tea and a light lunch will precede our annual business meeting. All who are interested are welcome to attend.
The Observer is still looking for worthy high school seniors interested in a $1,000 scholarship for college. Surely, there are parents and high school seniors out there who might find an extra $1,000 helpful toward college expenses. The deadline for applications is May 15. The one-year scholarships are for students residing in Suffield and attending a four–year college in the fall. They should be planning to study history, communications, journalism, creative writing, political science or research and should have participated in community service.
The Garden Club’s Market this year will be held on Saturday, May 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Phelps-Hatheway House Barn in Suffield. Admission is free!

As part of the Selectmen’s meeting on March 6, First Selectman Melissa Mack proclaims that March 12, 2019, was to be Girl Scout Day.
For the fifth year, the barn and grounds of the historic Phelps-Hatheway House & Gardens will be transformed into a Texas-style hoedown by the Stomp Out Cancer fundraiser on May 19. The fundraiser, locally referred to as Stomp, raises funds for non-profits that focus on cancer treatment and research. For a second year, the event will support Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF), which raises funds for childhood cancer research. The Stomp Planning Committee is excited to announce that Liz Smith, Alex’s mother, will be this year’s special guest. ALSF has recognized Stomp as one of their premier Grandstand events and identified it as a top fundraiser in 2018.
When Cub Scouts complete their career in the early years of the overall Scout program, those who want to continue – and almost all of them do – “cross over” to become Boy Scouts in a very nice ceremony held in the Cub Pack’s annual Blue & Gold Banquet.
E–cigarettes, or vape pens, have become very popular among high school students in the past five years. E–cigarettes are battery–operated devices that heat a liquid which usually contains nicotine and other flavoring and additives. Vaping is inhaling the aerosol or vapor produced by the heat. E–cigarettes are now the most commonly used form of tobacco and nicotine and are just as addictive as regular cigarettes. In addition, e–cigarettes can contain harmful ingredients such as ultrafine particles that can be inhaled deep into the lungs, chemical flavorings that are linked to lung disease, heavy metals such as nickel, tin and lead, and carcinogens like formaldehyde.
In memory of our late volunteer and Board Member, James F. Coggins, Jr., SCA offers a $1,000 award to a graduating Suffield high school senior who demonstrates selflessness, generosity and concern for the community through their volunteer activities.
