Unsheltered by Barbara Kingsolver. Harper Collins, 2018. 660 pp.(large print)
This is the story of two families who live in the same house, but in different centuries. One is in more modern times and the other in the past, and both families are struggling to even begin to make ends meet. The house had been badly built to begin with, and the passage of time has not been kind to its condition.
Editors of the Month meet with the editor in chief to determine the type of material to seek that month. Many submissions arrive through an originator’s own initiative, but the editors often call seasoned writers and request articles on key issues or topics. Between the 8th and 16th of the month, the editors read and edit all submissions, typically in two-hour sessions. The editors of the month have the option to write an editorial and to help select front page material.

Our weekly pilgrimage on the trails around town helps us to lead a wide awake life. Earlier this fall, I had launched into one of my endless narratives while climbing the hills; my friends may or may have not had their hands clapped over their ears, but their peace on the trail was short-lived, as my faithful pup uttered a strange bark and bounded off after two woodland creatures. She was in hot pursuit of a pair of porcupines. I watched as they headed towards the nearest tree. They were still on the ground, so I needed to rein in the pup, and I resorted to all the tricks I had learned at the dog obedience class which we had pretty much flunked earlier last spring.
In England, Boxing Day, the day after Christmas, is kind of a big deal. A national holiday, it’s a bona fide part of the holiday calendar. It’s the perfect coda to the Christmas celebration. Friends and family not seen on Christmas get together. Everyone’s relaxed.
K & P Flowers has been in Suffield for quite a few years, but for almost a year now has had a new owner. She is Erin Fletcher, who grew up in Bloomfield and now lives in Hartford. Erin’s interest in flowers started at an early age. She went to Bloomfield High School, where she was in the VoAg program and in Future Farmers of America. As a hobby she was arranging wedding flowers; at her first job at Moscarillo’s in West Hartford, her mother had to drive her to deliver the flowers to the wedding since she was only 15. She went on to UConn, and received a degree in horticulture.
She has worked at flower shops all over Connecticut.
At the end of the 2017-2018 school year, senior year students in Mr. Migliore’s band class wanted to pay their tribute to him for his 35 years of service to Suffield High School. The students did their research, reaching out to teachers, conductors, musicians and retired teachers from the area, asking for letters endorsing Mr. Migliore. The students followed the chain of command from the vice-principals, principal, superintendent and Board of Education to their state representative. Their request was to name the band room “The Joseph C. Migliore Music Center.” On the evening of the 2018 spring concert, the students presented Mr. Migliore with the plaque which is proudly displayed outside the band room. He also received a certificate from the state legislature congratulating him on his 35 years of service.
Zielinski’s Kindness Crew is proud to announce they raised a little over $1,300 for Will Power for Change (http://www.willswillpower.com/) in honor of William Davidson. Will was a 2010 graduate of SHS who took his own life just four months after returning from the Kandahar region. Will did not receive mental health assistance he needed to aid with his adjustment to civilian life. All funds raised will be going to a treatment center to help others such as Will. The Kindness Crew would like to thank Will and his family for his service and legacy.

A number of Thanksgivings ago my family had all gathered at my house for that special dinner. My children had small children at that time, so, although they tried to help, most of the preparation fell to me. We over-ate, rested awhile, and then we all went for a walk. When we got back it seemed to be time for the little ones to eat again so, while the mothers got to work on that, I decided that I would take some time to rest. Off to my room I went with the morning newspaper, knowing I would probably doze after a few lines of news.
With their parents and coaches beaming in support, three of Suffield High’s top athletes are pictured as they sign their commitments to play in college. From the left: McKenzie Sullivan, heading for soccer at Bentley; Sophie Lupone, ice hockey at Sacred Heart; and Anna Casinghino, field hockey at UConn. All three were stars in league-winning teams. Standing at the rear are six parents and three coaches: David and Michelle Sullivan, ice hockey coach Joe Gozzi, Tracy and Joe Lupone, and Heather and Brian Casinghino. David Sullivan and Heather Casinghino play double roles as both parent and coach.
