SPD Captain Sworn and Pinned

Captain James Canon, Jr. was welcomed into the Suffield Police Department several months ago (September Suffield Observer, Pg. 7), but it took a few weeks to get the paper work settled. Finally, on the afternoon of November 7, the Department’s Zak Community Room was packed with friends and family and a diversity of visiting police officers ready to honor and celebrate the next step in the impressive career of this new Suffield leader. First Selectman Melissa Mack said she was happy to have such an experienced officer to assist the Department in its continuing improvement. Police Commissioner Kenneth Pascoe said he thought Canon’s selection was an excellent choice.

Site Cleared for New Homes on East Street South

Site preparation is under way for a subdivision at 414 East Street South, three-quarters of a mile south of Bridge Street. The 40-acre parcel is on the east side of the highway, and about half of the land will be left undeveloped. The planned short road into the development will serve 20 new homes and the old King family home, which will be renovated. This property had been bought by Hamlet Homes from the estate of Dan King in 2017. It was considered in 2018 for an apartment development, with open space for which Mark O’Neal, the developer, described a winery and a recreation area, with a bridge over the canal to allow swimming in the Connecticut River.

Medicare Mail Flood

If your mailbox is anything like mine (and you’re at Medicare age) you are receiving a ton of solicitations telling you about the benefits of various private health insurance offerings. Some of them are for Medicare Advantage plans or Medicare Supplement plans or for Medicare Drug plans. They all want your business. You may want to throw most of it away, but there is at least one piece of mail I hope you do look at. That is the Medicare and You – 2020 handbook that comes from The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
