It’s That Time of Year – Medicare Coverage Checkup

We all have annual tasks to complete. We pay our property taxes, we get medical and dental checkups, we review our budgets, and we clean out closets (well, maybe not).

Probate Judge David Baram reminds court-appointed guardians to apply for grants for school supplies. Probate Courts have been awarding grants from the state Kinship Fund and Respite Fund to court-appointed guardians for more than a decade. Eligibility for the grants was expanded beyond relatives serving as guardians to all those appointed by the Probate Courts who meet low-income guidelines. A guardianship case typically arises in the Tobacco Valley Probate Court when parents are unable to care for their children due to mental illness, substance abuse or incarceration. Probate Courts appoint a grandparent or other relative to care for the children.
The Town of Suffield has received a $12,500 grant from the Amiel P. Zak Public Service Fund at the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving for its 350th Anniversary Celebration.
In the blink of an eye summer is at an end, and so is my first year as Director of the Suffield Parks and Recreation Department. What a fantastic year I have had, filled with meeting wonderful people that live and work in Suffield, and sharing in their passion for the Town!
We’re getting Suffield AMP-ed again—join the adventure! The Aging Master Program® (AMP) is designed to inform, encourage, and support older adults as they take steps to improve their lives and engage with their communities.
It was March 2017 when the Town voted to approve $2.8 M in bonding for the purchase of three new fire trucks, replacing others that had become too old to keep safely in service. Rescue 1 was delivered this year in May.
Sooner than you think – we are all going to be voting again! So, it’s the perfect time to volunteer for a local political organization and really get to know the candidates and issues. In addition to the two local major party committees: the Suffield Democratic Town Committee and the Suffield Republican Town Committee, the Town of Suffield has a large number of boards and commissions. If you have a special issue that is a concern or passion, volunteer for the related group. If no positions are open, check the Observer for their meeting dates and attend some of their meetings.
1. In October 2008, WNPR came to Suffield because it was a “swing town”. What does that mean?
In the Observer’s last report, the contract for the Town Hall Renovation project had been sent to Gilbane, the chosen “Construction Manager at Risk,” but had not yet been signed. The signed contract arrived in mid August, QA&M Architecture had already signed, and initial work had begun, principally in architectural layout and planning for basic systems: mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP).
