Rotary Thanks First Responders

As a thank you to the first responders of Suffield who aid residents who have been affected with COVID-19, the Rotary Club is providing $1500 donation for meals, snacks and beverages while responders are on the front-line of this epidemic.

How Social Distancing is Affecting Young People in Suffield

Most young people from Suffield have found themselves enduring a demanding schedule during this school year without much time for any leisure. Many of those in high school are diligently balancing their considerable academic course loads with sports and fine arts commitments, and for some, even a job that eats up their extra free time.

Sacrifice

The last several weeks have changed the lives for all of us. The COVID-19 reality has created a storm of varying proportions worldwide. For some, it’s more a time of forced catching up and slowing down, but for many others, it’s scary, disruptive and life-changing in disappointing and terrifying ways we never could have imagined even four months ago.

Taking A Break To Enjoy Nature

During one of our explorations during the past few weeks, my husband, Mel, and I discovered this delightfully beautiful State Conservation land in West Suffield off Babbs Road, just down from the entrance to Babb’s Beach.

New Record for April Snow

The photographer was too late to picture the lacy, half-inch snow clusters as they floated down onto the spring greenery on April 18, but it was a record-breaking amount for this late in April.

One More Interview

Following his presentation at Suffield High School on March 5, Greg Butler and his new Oscar cooperate happily for another interview. From the left: Greg, Claire Halasi-Kun, and Lauren Knowles.

Suffield Community Fund Seeks Advisory Committee Members

Suffield has a new community participation opportunity for residents to remain engaged while still practicing social distancing. In 2019, the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving established $100,000 community funds for each of the 29 towns in the Foundation’s region, which includes the town of Suffield.

Cooking Will Prepare Your Child For Life

While children are home during this period, it might be a good opportunity to extend learning beyond school classes to some basic life lessons. Sewing on a button, sorting and folding laundry, sweeping a floor and basic yardwork are all examples of small tasks that can occupy time and prepare a child for life.

Suffield Community Aid Services Available to ALL Residents During COVID-19

It can be said that what is truly valuable only comes into focus during times of crisis. This is especially true of Suffield Community Aid (SCA) – your local safety net – and the Town of Suffield’s chosen partner to deliver vital resources.

Ponies in the Front Yard

Two interesting creations recently appeared in a front yard just a short distance off North Main Street. They were designed and constructed by Mary Calcasola, who has lived in Suffield for many years and moved to Russell Avenue not long ago.

Need a Bike?

Young Liam McCormick of Boston Neck Road is 10 and in the fourth grade at Newington’s Aerospace and Engineering Academy, but he handed me his business card as the proprietor of Liam’s Re-cycles.

Westward Ho!

Those lucky enough to be well and staying at home have turned to various things to stay engaged.  My husband and I are watching Westerns.  I couldn’t be more surprised!  The solitary, tough, taciturn tall man-in-the-saddle image is an anathema to the kind of guy I like to see in the movies. But, for the moment, I am hooked.

It may be the vast landscape I can view on the screen – the plains, deserts and the towering buttes in Monument Valley. The vistas, so immense, majestic and eternal reduce the concerns of men to an inconsequential size. I like to see the bandannas worn around the neck instead of covering nose and mouth, except in the case of bad men.  Unlike us, the cowboy hero is free to wander from place to place, fighting visible villains, instead of an invisible virus.  Most of all there is a code of honor.  The good guys have it, in spades.  That is not to say that all Westerns have simple right and wrong plots, the best introduce some shades of gray.

This is our time to shine

Thirty-five years ago, I worked in a mailroom at a company outside New York City. It was a busy job, but it afforded wonderfully long breaks twice a day where employees would drink coffee and chit-chat.

Town Hall Renovation Update

Most of what has been happening recently in the Town Hall renovation project is being done by builder Gilbane and architect QA&M, who have been working toward the point where Gilbane can report a guaranteed maximum price for the work specified.
