Recycling and So Forth

Not every, but most of the markets where we shop have containers somewhere near their entrance where you can recycle many other plastic materials besides the plastic bags, which have been phased out. For example – containers for lettuce, carrot, bread, or anything with a recycle symbol on it. If there is not a symbol, just put it with your regular trash. If you need more information about how to maximize your plastic recycling, go to http://www.recyclect.com. Something that I have been doing to eliminate wasting paper is to call or send a letter to those who are sending mail asking for charitable donations that I don’t wish to contribute to, and asking them to take my name off their list.

Garage Relocation Voted Down

The “NO” signs soon followed. This one was across from the West Suffield Post Office. About a quarter of Suffield’s eligible voters made their choices at the Town referendum on January 28, and they turned down the proposed Town Highway Garage relocation with two resounding NO’s. The vote was 3 to 1 on the first question: to relocate the garage and permit development of its parcel on Ffyler Place, using Tax Increment Financing. The second question was declined even more strongly: a 4 to 1 NO vote rejected buying an existing building at 1160 South Street, renovated for the intended use, for no more than $2.4 M plus the existing highway garage property.

Homeowners Benefit Progam Filing

The Assessor’s Office would like to remind elderly and totally disabled homeowners that the filing period for the state and local Homeowners Benefit program is open and will end on Friday, May 15, 2020. This program will allow a credit on the June real estate tax bill to qualified taxpayers. The income limits are $37,000 for an unmarried homeowner and $45,100 for married homeowners, who must also be residents of this state, be age 65 by last December 31 or totally disabled and live in the home. New applicants must file an application by May 15, 2020; any current recipient of the benefit who has received a letter from the Assessor’s Office reminding them to apply this year must also apply no later than May 15, 2020 in order to continue to receive the benefit. Proof of income for 2019 is needed to apply.

Town Hall Emptying, but Renovation Project Hits Snag

As reported in the First Selectman’s updates to the Board of Selectmen, the project to renovate Suffield’s 58-year-old Town Hall seemed to be moving forward smoothly with expected costs still within the budget authorized. Now Project Manager Gilbane Building has received construction drawings from architects QA&M and has received guaranteed maximum price bids from sub-contractors.

WPCA Election Revote Ordered

It’s been a long time since a tie vote delayed the results of a Suffield Town election, but that’s what happened on November 5. The following events included a few twists and turns. As first announced, all the votes had clear winners, especially First Selectman Melissa Mack, who ran unopposed. But the Water Pollution Control Authority vote hit a snag. Six candidates were vying for the four seats to be filled (three members of the WPCA were continuing in office), and the vote produced three clear winners plus a fourth possible winner whose count was just one vote more than the next candidate on the list: 1,484 for Scott Guilmartin vs.
