Most of us who live in Suffield have warm memories of one of our favorite traditions, the annual production of Suffield on the Green. The word “production” is an apt designation. The event consumes innumerable hours, immeasurable energy and a wide range of skills from a large number of volunteers in our community. Not only do residents of Suffield support the effort, but many out-of-towners come as well. The appeal of our scenic Main Street, the display of small-town activity and the draw of a number of vendors – all of these contribute to the success of the day.
One of the events celebrating the 350th Anniversary of Suffield included aspiring artists painting mini barn quilts at A Stroke of Color, a gallery/studio at the Masonic Lodge on Bridge Street.
The Suffield 350th Anniversary art exhibit Visions of Suffield has been on display in the visitors’ center at the Phelps-Hatheway House since May, featuring 36 works by 15 local artists.

Years ago, Walt Disney said, “Around here, however, we don’t look backwards for very long. We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things, because we’re curious … and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” I heard the quote again a few weeks ago, and it really made me reflect on myself and think about the kinds of progress that I have made within my life. I recently spoke with one of my teachers, who grew up here in Suffield. They told me that nothing had changed since they had grown up here, which really got me thinking. Sure, returning to your hometown after fifteen, maybe twenty years and seeing that things have stayed the same would be extremely nostalgic for some people, but I disagree.

For most of the day on a weekend afternoon in late April, folks paused on the South Main Street sidewalk waiting for a mother bear and her cub to come down together from a big tree. Bears are not uncommon in the neighborhood, not far from large, wooded tracts, but they generally just amble through.
