Library Settles Into Its Old Home

The fresh new feel of the library, along with the expansive public space, continues to impress, and patrons are learning the new facilities and the new locations of old resources. New chairs and tables have been arriving, and small details, like two broken joints in the ramp handrails, are being corrected. One big surprise was the broken window discovered on July 20 as librarians arrived to set up for a Saturday morning magic show in the children’s room. One layer of one of the big new double-pane windows facing Main Street had shattered, evidently from an external impact; the inner pane was still in place. The show was shifted to the gallery, a new window was ordered, and all was back to normal several weeks later.

Dangerous Libraries

During Banned Books Week which occurs in September since 1982, librarians routinely prepare a list of books whose contents are considered by some to be so controversial that the books are banned from libraries, schools, communities, and even countries. It is scary when books, the repository of much of our knowledge and deemed by most to be fun, educational or classics, are deemed subversive and contaminating. Throughout the history of books, challenges to their contents have been frequent. But, interestingly, a book scare in the 19th and early 20th century was prompted not by content, but by another factor, a book’s physicality. At a time when public libraries were opening throughout the United States (the Kent Memorial Library opened in 1899), diseases were also rampant.

Survivor Journeys Wants Your Hero’s Story

From the moment someone is diagnosed with cancer, (s)he becomes a survivor. Some have precious little time after the diagnosis, while some go on to live many years, but all are enlisted in the struggle. And like any war, there are heroes. People, who in the face of great odds and obstacles, display amazing courage, often just by putting one foot in front of the other and persevering, while a few buckle under the burden, many more rise up to throw everything they can against it. It is the story of that struggle that Survivor Journeys wants to honor no matter how brief or long the fight has been.

Making Connections

It is hard to believe that October is already here and our school year is well underway for our students and staff. As with each new school year, our new beginning is yet another chance for our students to learn, explore, and enjoy the many opportunities the community of Suffield provides in its schools. We thank you for your continued support of the Suffield Public Schools, and we look forward to embracing, in partnership, all that there is to take pride in. With “Making Connections” as our theme for the year, we hope that you will consider setting aside some time to reach out to us, attend our many school events, and find ways to support the community organizations who dedicate countless hours to fulfill our promise of an excellent educational experience for our students. Prior to the start of the school year, our Board of Education adopted several goals that will serve to guide our district as we strive for excellence in the months ahead.
