We Are Opening Our Doors

If you stop into the Secod Baptist Church (SBC) this fall during the week you may hear the happy voices of pre-school aged children enjoying their day. The Suffield Cooperative Preschool is relocating from First Church of Christ to SBC in July. The Preschool will reside here during the 2019 – 2020 school year while renovations are undertaken at “First Church.”

In addition, we will also be welcoming Greater Springfield Music Together, a family music and movement class for infants, toddlers and pre-schoolers. They will be using the Fellowship Hall one day a week, year round. These are two examples of the types of groups we hope will be interested in using our facility after our Capital Campaign projects are completed.

Volleyball Marathon Held

Aces High Places Second in New England

Aces High, Team 176, the joint Windsor Locks/Suffield FIRST robotics team, has really “owned the sky” this 2019 season. Aces was seeded first in the first two competitions that we competed in and dominated the Western New England University District Competition in Springfield. With 30 elite teams from the New England area, Aces High won almost every match by a landslide and showed their full potential in the finals matches, securing the victory for their hometowns. When traveling to Worcester on April 10, where the top 64 teams in New England competed, we had our sights set on doing some serious damage. The competition was fierce.

Suffield Community Aid

In memory of our late volunteer and Board Member, James F. Coggins, Jr., SCA offers a $1,000 award to a graduating Suffield high school senior who demonstrates selflessness, generosity and concern for the community through their volunteer activities.

Trees and Mulch

Ah, spring! Time to get out and clean the gardens and apply mulch. Your Town Tree Committee (the Helena Bailey Spenser and Valyn Gallivan Funds) would like to offer you mulching suggestions that will keep your trees healthy. Mulching greatly benefits young and newly planted trees by keeping weeds at bay, helping the soil to retain moisture and protecting the trees from mowers and weed whackers. Proper mulching is a good thing.

Teens and Vaping

E–cigarettes, or vape pens, have become very popular among high school students in the past five years. E–cigarettes are battery–operated devices that heat a liquid which usually contains nicotine and other flavoring and additives. Vaping is inhaling the aerosol or vapor produced by the heat. E–cigarettes are now the most commonly used form of tobacco and nicotine and are just as addictive as regular cigarettes. In addition, e–cigarettes can contain harmful ingredients such as ultrafine particles that can be inhaled deep into the lungs, chemical flavorings that are linked to lung disease, heavy metals such as nickel, tin and lead, and carcinogens like formaldehyde.

Annual Bixler Memorial Picnic

May 4 is quickly approaching. It will be 13 years since CPL Stephen R. Bixler gave his life for our country. Even after 13 years, it is still so very hard to realize Steve will not be coming home. The community of Suffield is coming together once again to honor and remember Stephen, at his Annual Memorial Picnic.

Suffield Players: Ordinary People

Suffield’s own Lisa Parker has written several new plays being showcased at the next Suffield Players “Page-to-Stage” reading, produced in cooperation with Kent Memorial Library. Ordinary People – An Evening of New One-Act Plays will perform at The Suffield Senior Center, 145 Bridge Street in Suffield, on April 18 at 7 p.m. The performance is free, and open to the public. “The different short plays in Ordinary People reflect the day-to-day realities and situations most of us encounter,” says Parker. “And the folks we all know… or think we know. Everyone has a story!”

Often funny, sometimes sweet, and occasionally poignant moments punctuate her plots.

Eagle Brothers Honored

This was not the first time that Boy Scout Troop 260 has had several Eagle Scouts in the same family, but the Court of Honor on February 26 was the first time the brothers were awarded in the same ceremony. Michael Sattan and Stephen Sattan both received their coveted awards that evening, with a packed Fellowship Hall at Second Baptist to applaud. Following the Scouts’ impressive candle-lighting ceremony, all the Eagle Scouts present, young and old, lined up at the side of the audience, and Assistant Scoutmaster Art Sikes administered the Eagle Charge. Scoutmaster Mike Cremmins presented the awards, and special recognitions were given by State Representative Tami Zawistowski and First Selectmen Melissa Mack. Senior Patrol Leader Wyatt Cashman served as master of ceremonies.
