Appreciation for Real Life Stories

There is a man I communicate with called Rem, who is an Australian Aboriginal. He is known in an ancient native traditional manner, for what translates into English as “elder child.” He has a special gift for living and guiding others based on right and wrong. It’s a gift for knowing and seeing outcomes. He claims it’s NOT a special gift, that everyone innately has the power to see the future, but it requires being a “child,” and we don’t use it. Desire for self blocks it.

Evolution of our Solar Farm

The timing of the event did seem odd, but it makes sense when the whole story is told. On May 30, a few weeks ago, First Selectman Melissa Mack cut a ribbon strung across one aisle of the big array of solar cells erected in Kevin Sullivan’s back field on North Street in late 2016. The ribbon cutting was a happy event marked with brief celebratory speeches by key participants, who explained that the 2-megawatt array would produce enough energy to power 500 houses. And it’s clean energy, from an inexhaustible source. The builder and operator of the solar farm is Lodestar Energy, a young company in Avon founded to create solar energy projects like Suffield’s that are environmentally, socially, and financially successful.

Summer Farmers Market

The Suffield Farmers Market is up and running for the summer months with vendors offering their wares every Saturday morning from 9 a.m. until noon, rain or shine, in the center of town on the south green (across from the barber shop). If you didn’t make your way to the Market in June, you still have July, August and September to experience Suffield’s Saturday morning “get together”. This year there is an opportunity to sign up as a Friend of the Suffield Farmers Market and pledge to get the word out and display the Farmers Market Swag. We have farm themed visors and bags for children as well as a chance to plant something to take home. We’ll be offering tee shirts, aprons and grocery bags for purchase.

Academy Hall Open for Rentals

Academy Hall, in West Suffield center, is open April through November for rentals. Built in 1855 as the Center District schoolhouse, it is an ideal spot to host a party or reception, with large rooms and a full kitchen. It is run by volunteer members of the West Suffield Village Improvement Association, and all proceeds are used to maintain the building. Our rates are very reasonable. Visit our web site WestSuffieldvia.org for photos and information.

Youth Theater Plans Arts Festival

Although it may not be widely recognized, Suffield has a vibrant arts community. This summer, that community will have the opportunity to flourish and come together through the Suffield Arts Festival. On July 14, local artists will convene at Bruce Park for a day full of performances and activities, all while honoring the themes of unity, peace, love, and hope. The Festival will begin at 2 p.m., and will be held outdoors. Songs, dances, plays, comedy and more will keep you entertained all throughout the day!

SFES Family Fun Day

The Suffield Foundation for Excellent Schools will hold its first annual “Family Fun Day” on Saturday, August 25, 2018 at Copper Hill Golf Club located at 20 Copper Hill Drive, East Granby. Spend one of the last few days before school starts enjoying activities geared to all ages. For the serious golfers, there will be nine holes of classic golf; for those age eight and above without clubs but having two feet, there will be the challenge of nine holes of foot golf, a fun sport that combines golf and soccer and involves kicking a soccer ball into a 21” cup on the golf course. In addition, there will be a barbecue buffet, bounce houses, face painting, a dunk tank, a tea cup raffle, and crafts centering around the theme of our March 2019 gala “Fire and Ice” to make and take home. For those unfamiliar with the SFES, there will be an exhibit showing some of the grants and programs that the educational foundation has funded.

Seniors Walk Spaulding Halls

There was a lot of excitement at Spaulding School on Friday morning, June 15. The students, K-2, had made congratulatory signs for the seniors who came to participate in the second annual Senior Walk through the halls of Spaulding School where most of the seniors had started their education. The seniors walked from the high school across Bruce Park and were greeted first by inspirational signs placed strategically along their path. As they entered Spaulding School, the seniors were welcomed by enthusiastic children as they walked down the hallways. Spaulding students and teachers stood, waving handmade signs, while Pomp and Circumstance played on the PA system.
