Holiday Tree Gala

Suffield’s annual Holiday Tree Gala is moving to the Phelps-Hatheway House & Barn! The gala will feature artificial trees decorated by people in our town: organizations, schools, clubs, churches, businesses, neighborhoods and individuals.

Look Who Won This Truck!

The winning ticket is #3052 and the winner of the all-new 2019 Dodge RAM 1500 truck is Suffield resident Greg Honey. Greg purchased his ticket earlier this summer at the Suffield Farmers Market. The raffle drawing was held Sunday, September 8, during Suffield on the Green, the annual town fair. The truck raffle was conceived of by the Suffield 350th Anniversary Committee to help offset the costs of more than 30 events, programs and projects being planned for the commemoration of Suffield’s big birthday in October 2020. Joe Artioli of Artioli Chrysler Dodge RAM provided the truck which has been displayed around town throughout the summer.

Time To Go Green, Suffield: Recycling and Waste Reduction

The Board of Selectmen created an Environmental and Sustainability Task Force which held its first meeting July 29 and will be meeting every month to advance such initiatives as beautification, education, environmental protection, recycling and waste reduction.

Voting in Suffield

The November 5 Municipal Election will be held in the Middle School Gymnasium, 350 Mountain Road, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Sunday Hours for Town Leaf Disposal

The Suffield Landfill will be open for extended hours this fall on six consecutive Sundays for leaf disposal only. No other items will be accepted during that time. The Sunday hours will be from noon to 4 p.m. starting on October 13 thru November 17. Leaves are also accepted throughout the year during the landfill’s regular hours on Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The landfill is the only public location in town for leaf disposal. If you have any questions please contact Kevin Pepka at 860-668-3837 or the Public Works Office at 860-668-3890.

Too Much, Too Fast

The Library dust is barely settled. Bridge Street School sits and decays. Major Town Hall renovations are just beginning. Now the Board of Selectmen proposes to undertake a full Fyler Place makeover. Most would agree that mixed development of that area is highly desirable.

Chief’s Goodbye

I have decided to take an opportunity and retire early from the Town Of Suffield. My last day as a full time employee will be October 4, 2019.

First Selectman’s Update

Fall is my favorite season! Although shorter days, the air is crisp and scented with pumpkin spice, kiddos return to routines and Sundays are for family and football! I hope your summer allowed time to experience new programs offered by our revitalized Parks and Recreation Department (P&R) under Director Pete Leclerc, new Recreation and Sports Programmer Jen Filer, Special Programs Coordinator Donna Carney-Bastrzycki and Assistant Pam Cocca. P&R’s fun-filled camps highlighted new learning-based activities: nature education, swimming, hiking and cooperative games. Guest presenters, the Monarch Butterfly Ranch, Police and Fire Departments and two-time Himalayan Mountain trekker Scott Emmons, engaged and inspired campers.

Thanks to the Suffield Police

We are an elderly couple who recently moved to the beautiful Suffield area. And you know sometimes a bit forgetful. After taking a nice stroll along the canal waterway, we arrived home only to realize we had left our digital camera at the park. Fearing it was lost, I posted on Facebook hoping to get help in finding it. Within a day, I got a reply from a nice man who is involved with the conservancy of the canal who returned the camera to us.

Remembering Suffield Town Center

The demolition of the old Suffield, Connecticut town center was the biggest mistake the Town ever made. Why wasn’t the town center placed in the Historic District by the Historic District Commission?

Support for the Observer

The Suffield Observer newspaper has always lived up to its mission: “To build a sense of community… and provide a forum where all sides of issues may be addressed.”

We Are the World

Bienvenido a los Estados Unidos. Welcome. Wrote Emma Lazarus, “Give me your tired, your poor. Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” With the image of caged children seared in our brains, it’s time to reflect. We are a restless species and every one of us, or our ancestors, came here from somewhere else.
