Win This Truck! and Other Adventures in Fundraising

Suffield’s 350th Anniversary Committee is hard at work raising money to pay for our town’s birthday celebration in 2020. We have been selling tee shirts and ball caps, and we’re hosting a golf outing and a beer tasting, but our biggest fundraiser by far is the truck raffle that will be held at Suffield on the Green at 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. We need your help to make it a success! Truck raffle tickets are $20 each and no more than 4,000 tickets will be sold. Those are pretty good odds!

Try harder at being nicer

A couple of years ago, while sitting in on my daughter’s basketball practice, I noticed a father and his daughter sitting next to a Star Wars book. I’m a huge Star Wars fan, so I made my introductions.

Town Hall Concepts Studied

In the Observer’s last report, the contract for the Town Hall Renovation project had been sent to Gilbane, the chosen “Construction Manager at Risk,” but had not yet been signed. The signed contract arrived in mid August, QA&M Architecture had already signed, and initial work had begun, principally in architectural layout and planning for basic systems: mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP).

Republican Town Caucus

On July 17, Suffield Republicans gathered at the Republican Town Caucus to endorse candidates for the upcoming municipal election.

Democrat Town Caucus

Suffield Democrats met at a caucus on July 22 at the Suffield Volunteer Ambulance Association to consider endorsing candidates for the November town elections. A full room of 50 or more people attended and gave enthusiastic and unanimous support for an excellent slate of candidates. The group is a mix of incumbents and newcomers who are looking forward to serving the town on different boards and commissions. Attorney Derek Donnelly moderated the caucus which took place after a brief Democratic Town Committee meeting where a slate of candidates was approved. First Selectman Melissa Mack, along with Selectmen Mel Chafetz and Peter Hill were endorsed for new two-year terms on the Board of Selectmen.

Time To Get Political

Sooner than you think – we are all going to be voting again! So, it’s the perfect time to volunteer for a local political organization and really get to know the candidates and issues. In addition to the two local major party committees: the Suffield Democratic Town Committee and the Suffield Republican Town Committee, the Town of Suffield has a large number of boards and commissions. If you have a special issue that is a concern or passion, volunteer for the related group. If no positions are open, check the Observer for their meeting dates and attend some of their meetings.
