Around Town Two Plus Four

When Dan Kehoe moved to North Carolina in 2017, he took his Around Town Singers franchise with him. But the original group of enthusiasts here didn’t want to let the idea go, so they renamed themselves Around Town Two and have continued successfully with many of the same great voices, led by Jenn Jarvis. Their “Gazing at the Stars” dinner cabaret concert in Father Ted Hall on April 26 included a surprise extra: Jenn and several from here had gone South last summer to share in one of Dan’s Around Town Singers concerts in Clayton, N. C., so this time Dan came north to join Around Town Two, bringing with him three members from Clayton. The combination worked well. Father Ted Hall had been provided with colorful stage lights (actually down on the floor close to the tables), and after a fine dinner, Dan spoke a bit about his group in the South.

Masons ID Kids Again

On July 20, members and family members in partnership with the K-9 Olympics held a CT CHIP (Connecticut Child Identification Program) event. Every year the Corrections department of Connecticut holds a K-9 Olympics competition. State Police, local police and correction departments from all over New England travel to the corrections facility in Enfield for this importatnt event. This year must have been one of the hottest on record; the heat index was over 100 degrees. That did not stop the participants, dogs and trainers, from doing their best.

To Lexicography

Dictionaries have been around a long time, perhaps beginning on cuneiform tablets around 2300 BCE (or BC if you prefer) in the area of modern-day Syria. In 1604, the first English alphabetical dictionary was published.

Kinship & Respite Grants

Probate Judge David Baram reminds court-appointed guardians to apply for grants for school supplies. Probate Courts have been awarding grants from the state Kinship Fund and Respite Fund to court-appointed guardians for more than a decade. Eligibility for the grants was expanded beyond relatives serving as guardians to all those appointed by the Probate Courts who meet low-income guidelines. A guardianship case typically arises in the Tobacco Valley Probate Court when parents are unable to care for their children due to mental illness, substance abuse or incarceration. Probate Courts appoint a grandparent or other relative to care for the children.

Our Polish Heritage News

In October 2016, the Polish Heritage Society presented a unique music program that combined the history of the Polish immigrant movement into Suffield with the development of the folk songs from their native land.

The Social Network of Summer Running

I have always thought of running as a solitary endeavor. Traveling around the beautiful roads of Suffield this time of year it is easy to spot runners and their telltale washboard abs. Believe it or not, I have even had some folks living under my roof who actually think running is fun. But I may be on to them as they seem most excited to strap on the running shoes and head out the door when it is time to wash the dishes, mow the lawn or squeeze the dogs anal glands. This summer I started to notice the signs around town about a running series held at Bruce Park on Tuesday evenings.

Waldo… “Revisited”…

As previously reported, I first spotted the barred owl in late December during a freakishly warm spell, in a heavy rainstorm. He became a frequent visitor for almost three months. During that time I was surprised to learn that an almost supernatural creature of the night could bask in sunlight by day, arriving in the morning, and tucking into that favorite cozy spot to take advantage of the warmth of the rising sun. I was relieved but truly amazed that such a large bird of prey, in a winter season offering him very little food, would openly perch in a tree, over an active bird feeder but would still rather doze off than desperately hunt the songbirds or even the squirrels below. Then, at dusk, would fly away to hunt more favored but elusive prey.
