If your mailbox is anything like mine (and you’re at Medicare age) you are receiving a ton of solicitations telling you about the benefits of various private health insurance offerings. Some of them are for Medicare Advantage plans or Medicare Supplement plans or for Medicare Drug plans. They all want your business. You may want to throw most of it away, but there is at least one piece of mail I hope you do look at. That is the Medicare and You – 2020 handbook that comes from The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
Having a “glass half full” approach to life has long been considered important for overall wellness. But evidence suggests that there may be truth in this folk wisdom.

One November night in an attempt to get away from my roommate’s clutches, I toddled down to the triple on the other side of the dorm where my friend lived. There, as the skies were darkening, my friend told me about the night she lost her dad. He had been ill, but the story was still heart-wrenching and almost beyond belief, as I had led a sheltered existence, thankfully, in that department. I must say she was a good story teller, eyes bugging out, pregnant pauses, hands gesticulating as she filled in the details of that awful night. One of those details, which has stayed with me for all these years, is the part when a crow flew into the window and became trapped in their house on the dad’s final night.

The library punch list grows shorter. That list of not-quite-finished items that typifies all significant building projects has happily lost some of its items; work continues on others. Electricians buried power cables for three new light posts to illuminate the concrete stairways leading down from the new south side door. That project, donated by the Library Foundation, then paused in early October awaiting delivery of the light posts themselves. The first half of the historical archives material, returned from storage in September, has been distributed on the new shelving of the Spencer Historical Room.
