KML Teen Programs

Suffield Youth Services and Kent Memorial Library are working together to help SHS students manage the stress of finals. Parents can encourage their students to attend the June 4 Study with A Therapy Dog session at the Youth Center located in the Senior Center on Bridge Street. From 6 to 7:30 p.m. students can study with friends, steady the nerves with therapy dogs and nourish the soul with pizza and treats. Why study alone when you can be with friends? “Healers with Halos” have been very generous with their time, and the students really enjoy petting the dogs while they study.

Blood and Tears

I recently read Sam Fuller’s account of how the library on 50 North Main Street came to be. The building’s inception was awash in what Sam called “blood and tears.”

Summer Race Series at Bruce Park

The Suffield Parks and Rec department is excited to announce a Summer 5K Series at Bruce Park, on the high school’s cross country course. Races will be every Tuesday at 6 p.m. from June 18 through July 16. Charles Brydges, a rising senior at Suffield High School, is organizing the races for the Department.  “I’ve participated in similar races in nearby towns for five or six years. I’m excited for Suffield to have a similar race series”, said Mr. Brydges.

Annual Packard Golf Tournament

While it is hard to believe, on Friday August 9, at Oak Ridge Golf Course the Suffield Rotary will be sponsoring the 28th Annual Glenn T. Packard Memorial Golf Tournament. For over a quarter of a century, this tournament, memorializing Glenn, has benefitted the Town of Suffield and its athletes.

Great Day, Great Ride for PMC

The short respite in this year’s unending spring rains came on May 11, just the right day for Suffield’s eighth annual PMC Kids Ride. The children’s ride is a supplement to the big Pan-Mass Challenge bike ride, a two-day event each summer ending on Cape Cod in Provincetown. All PMC events are fundraisers for the Jimmy Fund, supporting adult and pediatric cancer research and treatment at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. The Suffield PMC Kids Ride, well organized by Chris Nikolis, was the first in Connecticut. The Suffield ride starts next to McAlister Intermediate School, with older kids riding up Hill Street to Russell Avenue and back – some kids make the five-mile round trip twice.

Future Beauty Starts at McAlister

Every year McAlister Intermediate School celebrates Arbor Day with the help of the Suffield Garden Club (SGC). Following a special Arbor Day assembly for the entire fourth grade class, members of the club distribute a sapling tree to each child, with instructions and advice for planting and care. The annual program, covering about 150 students this year, was begun in 1965 through the generosity of SGC member Valyn Gallivan. This year the little trees, with roots nicely packaged, were Kousa Dogwoods, a small, decorative tree with a reddish purple fall color and white blossoms that appear in late spring. They were obtained from Bartlett Nursery with the help of SGC member Mike DeSoto, who is employed by Bartlett.

NFL Drafts Suffield Academy Grad

There has been a great deal of interest in recent weeks about the NFL draft and the choice by the Miami Dolphins of Christian Wilkins, a 23-year-old Suffield Academy alumnus (class of ’15); his athletic gifts are well known and appreciated by many.
